OK POKE FANS-What are we thinkin at Howdy AFA Falcons

I am thinking not a score of 0-0 as in 1976 at home vs AFA in Bill Lewis' debut as the Pokes coach taking over from Fred Akers.

I do know that Cowboys in Colorado is a co-sponsor at the Academy Tailgate with UW Alumni Assoc and the Cowboy Joe Club starts at 2pm at the far east end of Lot 3 at the Academy parking lot-east of the Falcon stadium and all are welcome.

Poke Fans are in sections L24 and L25 -SE area of Falcon stadium at about the 20 yard line as I recall. Come down and support the Cowboys--weather looks very good as well and should be a big Cowboy fan turnout!

The Pokes win it 27-17...

VB

I only watched a little of the match against NM in Albuquerque, but Cowgirls lost the match 1-3. After being tied 1-1, they lost the 3rd set 27-29. I have to wonder if they could have won the match if the third set had gone our way. In any case, our stats were not very good. We are now tied with 3 other teams at 2-4. Link to NM stats.

AFA TAILGATE starts at 2pm--Be part of the beginning of a great day

LOTS of Food and beverage!!

Cowboys in Colorado is a co-sponsor at the COWBOY Tailgate with the UW Alumni Association and the Cowboy Joe Club.

Starts at 2pm at the far east end of Lot 3 at the Academy parking lot-east of the Falcon stadium and all are welcome.

I understand that the parking in Lot 3 is free!

Paul Roach Obituary

Laramie, Wyo. (Oct. 11, 2023) --
A memorial service for former Wyoming Head Football Coach and Athletics Director Paul Roach will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19 at St. Paul’s Newman Center at 1800 E. Grand Avenue in Laramie, Wyo. The service will begin at 10 a.m., Mountain Time.

A reception in the Wildcatter Stadium Club and Suites at Wyoming’s War Memorial Stadium will follow the memorial service. The family has asked that any memorial gifts be made to the University of Wyoming’s Cowboy Joe Club at https://www.cowboyjoeclub.com or by contacting the Cowboy Joe Club at (307) 766-6242.

Roach passed away in Pullman, Wash., on Sept. 3, 2023, at the age of 95 with family members at his side.

The only man in University of Wyoming history to serve as athletics director and head football coach simultaneously, Roach served as the school’s AD from 1986 through 1996, and head football coach from 1987-90. Roach soon became one of the biggest stories in college football, directing the Pokes to a 21-5 record in his first two seasons, winning back-to-back Western Athletic Conference Championships in 1987 and ‘88 and earning two Holiday Bowl game appearances.

“Coach Roach was so much more than a damn good coach,” said UW Athletics Director Tom Burman. “He was caring, smart, disciplined, funny, but most of all a great communicator. He knew when and how to say things -- a skill few have -- and he did it without an ego. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Marge and his entire family. Wyoming will be forever grateful to him. We will all miss Coach Roach!”

As athletics director, he guided Wyoming’s total athletic program through tremendous success. His vision led to construction of the Rochelle Athletics Center and in 1993 he established the University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame, to which he was later inducted in the Class of 1999.

As head football coach, he took over a program that was 27-32 in the five previous seasons. Roach’s 1987 and ‘88 teams were undefeated in league play both years. He was named the league’s Coach of the Year following each of those seasons. He was named the Kodak Region V Coach of the Year in 1987, and was a two-time finalist for National Coach the Year. During his four-year tenure, he guided the Cowboys to a 35-15-0 record and three bowl-game appearances, adding a bid to the 1990 Copper Bowl in his final season as head coach. Upon retiring from his head-coaching position after the 1990 season, he selected his former offensive coordinator, Joe Tiller, as his successor.

Roach’s name will forever be synonymous with Wyoming’s rich athletic tradition. During his first stint as an assistant coach with UW from 1962 through 1970, he was the Cowboy offensive coordinator and backfield coach when Wyoming: earned three consecutive WAC Championships in 1966, ‘67 and ‘68; won the 1966 Sun Bowl; and appeared in the 1968 Sugar Bowl.

He left Wyoming following the 1969 season but returned to UW in November of 1985 to become the Executive Director of the Cowboy Joe Club after a very successful coaching career in the NFL. He was appointed University of Wyoming Athletics Director on Sept. 1, 1986.

When Roach left Wyoming in 1969, he coached two years (1970-71) at the University of Wisconsin, then accepted a position with the Oakland Raiders of the NFL in 1972. As a member of John Madden’s staff from 1972-74, Roach helped lead the Raiders to three Western Division titles and one AFC Championship game appearance. Following a two-year stint (1975-76) as offensive coordinator for Bart Starr with the Green Bay Packers, Roach was named backfield coach with the Denver Broncos and served in that capacity from 1977 through 1980. During his time in Denver the Broncos played in Super Bowl XII, which was their first Super Bowl appearance at the conclusion of the 1977 season.

Following the 1980 season, Roach entered private business, and for five years was the co-owner and President of Western Pro Sports, Inc., and Western Financial Services, an organization which served as a negotiating agency for professional football players.

In November of 1985, Roach decided to make a career move, moving back to Wyoming, the state he learned to love two decades earlier, to join the Cowboy Joe Club as its executive director. After one year with the Cowboy Joe Club, he was named UW’s Athletics Director.

Roach retired from UW in 1996.

Pokes in the NFL (Week #5)

Pokes in the Pros: Week 5

LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/10/23) – Tashaun Gipson’s final season with the University of Wyoming football team was 2011. He had exhausted his collegiate eligibility, and in 2012 he took aim at the National Football League but had to do so the hard way.

He wasn’t drafted high, or at all for that matter, meaning he needed to earn a roster spot as an undrafted free agent. Gipson did so with the Cleveland Browns, and that jumpstarted a career that has spanned 13 seasons.

On Sunday night, in primetime, Gipson showed he still has it. The 33-year-old reeled in his 33rd career interception, to go alongside two tackles, in the San Francisco’s 42-10 victory over Dallas.

Gipson, who has started all five games, has 17 tackles on the season for the 5-0 49ers. His 33 picks are third among active players.

Gipson is just one of many former Cowpokes that showed well during Week 5 of the NFL season. Below is a list of the former Wyoming student-athletes and how they did this past week.

Carl Granderson, New Orleans Saints

Granderson enjoyed a successful game in the Saints’ 34-0 win at New England. He recorded four tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and two quarterback hits.

Granderson, who has started all five games, lays claim to 17 tackles, five tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits and one forced fumble for 3-2 New Orleans.

The Saints travel to Houston in Week 6.

Logan Wilson, Cincinnati Bengals

Wilson carded a strong game in the Bengals’ 34-20 victory at Arizona. He boasted nine tackles – second on the team – and one pass defended.

Wilson has registered 35 tackles, two tackles for loss and two interceptions for 2-3 Cincinnati.

The Bengals host the Seahawks in Week 6.

Chad Muma, Jacksonville Jaguars

Muma logged another stout outing in the Jaguars’ 25-20 win over Buffalo in London. In his second start of the year, he made four tackles.

Muma now has 13 tackles for 3-2 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars host Indianapolis in Week 6.

Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Allen played well, albeit in a 25-20 loss to Jacksonville, on Sunday in London. He went 27-for-40 for 359 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed four times totaling 14 yards with another score.

For the season, Allen is 128-for-175 for 1,407 yards with 11 touchdowns and five picks. He also has 120 yards on 20 carries with three scores.

Buffalo hosts the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.

Marcus Epps, Las Vegas Raiders

Epps made his fifth consecutive start in the Raiders’ 17-13 victory over Green Bay. He recorded one tackle.

Epps has 20 tackles and two tackles for losses for the 2-3 Raiders.

Las Vegas hosts New England in Week 6.

Tyler Hall, Las Vegas Raiders

Hall played for the first time this season in the Raiders’ 17-13 victory over Green Bay. He performed well, registering four tackles, for 2-3 Las Vegas.

The Raiders host New England in Week 6.

Andrew Wingard, Jacksonville Jaguars

Wingard didn’t record a stat in the Jaguars’ 25-20 win over Buffalo in London.

Wingard owns four tackles on the season for 3-2 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars host Indianapolis in Week 5.

Mike Purcell, Denver Broncos

Purcell logged a solid game in the Broncos’ 31-21 loss to the New York Jets. He had a pair of tackles and one pass defended.

Purcell lays claim to five tackles, two quarterback hits and one pass defended for 1-4 Denver.

The Broncos travel to Kansas City for Thursday Night Football.

University of Washington

The University of Washington has filed an appeal to the restraining order that the PAC 2 schools got a few weeks ago. The other schools that are leaving the PAC 12 have filed statements in support of Washington's appeal. It sounds like this is a delaying action, as it doesn't appear that this will be successful. It is also mentioned that both OSU and WSU have offered to work with the remainder of the PAC conference on the NCAA Tournament Units that is owed to the teams in the PAC that were earned over the previous years and that money amounts to a little over $60 million.

I understand the PAC 2 and the MWC have an agreement on a merger framework in place. The comments I heard were that the PAC 2 and the MWC have had very deep and extensive discussions about the merger and a framework of a merger has been agreed upon.

Truly what is happening here is what we all expected, and that is more negotiations between the parties. This is not over but it is most definitely moving forward.
