Boise

Taking the wife and kids up to Boise for the game.

My wife and I have been talking about going to an away game for years. We finally decided to actually do it!

Any idea how many Wyoming fans will make the trip?

1,000?
2,500?

What is the typical turn out for Wyoming fans in Boise over the years?

Crazy MWC Stat - Not Wyo Related

This has to be one of the most insane stats of the College Football season. It doesn't apply to UW, since we don't play Utah State, but check out this:

Utah State First Quarters - Aggies have been outscored 77-10 (70-3 in FBS games) in 6 games.

Utah State 2nd-4th Quarters - Have outscored their opposition 254-81

They were down 14-0 to Iowa and finished a respectable 24-14

They were tied 7-7 with Idaho State and won 78-28 (scored 44 in the second quarter)

They were down 29-0 to AFA (22-0 in the first) and made it semi-respectable (39-21)

They were down 24-0 to James Madison before they came back to tie it at 38 before losing 45-38

They were down 17-0 to UConn (UConn!) and came back and won 34-33 on a blocked PAT at the end (obviously reminiscent of our game at UConn 2 years ago where we stopped a two point conversion at the end that would have tied it)

They were down 17-0 to CSU and then scored 44 in a row to kick the crap out of the sheep

I am definitely not a fan of Utah State, but as a College Football fan that is one of the craziest sequence of games I have ever seen. Whatever they are doing in pregame they might want to change it up.

I was mostly looking at USU because they play Fresno tomorrow night and that will be a very interesting game.

Some talk that Jake Dickert (WSU HC)....

Some talk that Jake Dickert, HC at WSU is having his name connected to Michigan State's opening. Jake has been asked and said that he has not spoken with anyone at Michigan State, but that doesn't mean his agent couldn't have spoken to them. Michigan State is the one real big opening right now, but some others will come along, it is just the nature of the beast.

One point that was brought up about Jake's position at Wazzu, is here it is, the middle of October, and they have nothing settled for next year. I wonder how can you recruit to Wazzu or OSU at this time? How can you bring recruits on board and tell them what their schedules in the future will look like? I would imagine that both Smith at OSU and Dickert at Wazzu will be hot commodities after this season is over.

UW Difference Makers Campaign Nearing Completion

UW Difference Makers Campaign Nearing Completion

Laramie, Wyo. (Oct. 20, 2023) -- A significant investment by Casper’s Double 4 Foundation and Dave and Melanie True continues the significant momentum of the Difference Makers Campaign, University of Wyoming Athletics’ drive to raise millions in private support to renovate the westside of War Memorial Stadium and build a new competition pool facility.

The major gift brings the campaign to almost 75 percent of UW’s $20 million fundraising goal. The private support from the Pokes dedicated fans and supporters will be combined with a significant investment by the state of Wyoming and the university to complete the two facilities.

“There is no question that this will be an advantage to the state of Wyoming and its citizens,” says Dave True, Double 4 Foundation Trustee and University of Wyoming Trustee. “Major athletic programs bring a huge benefit not only to the institution, but to the students. As a student, a major part of your experience is outside the classroom and a good program at the Division I level contributes to that experience.”

Once finished, the westside renovations will provide fans with an enhanced experience, featuring premium loge seating, chairback seating in the lower stands, and improved concessions, restrooms, and lighting. Additionally, the renovation of the press box and media area will elevate the university’s image, as national media outlets converge on UW to cover the Cowboys.

This plan—which has been in the works for five years—also includes a new competitive pool facility featuring a 50-meter pool, locker rooms, and seating areas, something Athletic Director Tom Burman said has been sorely needed at UW. Although the John Corbett Building has served the teams for more than three decades, the current facility is more than 50-years old and is woefully inadequate to support a collegiate swimming and diving program. Additionally, this facility will serve the youth of the state, offering a 50-meter training opportunity that is currently unavailable in the southern Wyoming.

“The current facilities don’t measure up,” says True. “If we as a state and a four-year institution want to be competitive to attract fans, athletes, and students, we have to have top-notch facilities.”

The True family’s support of Wyoming athletics is a family tradition. Their generous contributions have not only funded critical infrastructure developments and state-of-the-art facilities but have also provided opportunities to countless student-athletes.

“Their commitment to Wyoming athletics is not only measured in buildings but also in the pride that characterizes the Wyoming Cowboy family, a testament to their lasting impact,” says Burman.

At universities nationwide, investments in athletic programs hold a great significance, serving as the foundation upon which loyalty and enduring connections are built.

“Especially for Wyoming-based families, successful athletic programs build a sense of loyalty that you can’t build any other way,” True continues. “Athletics is often the first experience that the youth of Wyoming have with the university.”

With the gift, the Double 4 Foundation joins other major supporters for the project including the late Susie McMurry, Cody and Patsy Ritchie, Admiral Beverage, Bruce and Kathy Bummer, Terry and Missy Gottberg, Tad and Ann Herz, Pat and Nancy Higgins, Eric and Laura Marsh, Doug and Susan Samuelson, Bill and Victoria Scarlett, Wyoming Sports Properties, and two anonymous donors.

Other notable gifts include Al Carollo, Jr. and Carolyn Carollo, Clayton and Kandy Hartman, Scott and Anne Macdonald, Dale and Paula Strickland, Don and Betty Walters, and Roy and Caryl Cline. Overall, more than 50 donations for the project have been received, including gifts from four donors who have made their first major commitment to UW.

War Memorial Stadium opened in 1950 and is the oldest stadium in the Mountain West Conference. The stadium is the highest NCAA Division I football stadium in the country at an elevation of 7,220 feet and has experienced extensive renovations and upgrades over the past decade, including the addition of the Wildcatter Stadium Club and Suites in 2010, and the construction of the McMurry High Altitude Performance Center in 2018.

The westside renovation will be completed in two separate phases, beginning in the fall of 2023, with a scheduled date of completion in the summer of 2025. The pool is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

For more information about the Difference Makers campaign, contact Tom Burman or Randy Welniak at the Cowboy Joe Club by calling (307) 766-6242.

Linder seems optimistic

Based on Cody's 7220Sports article, Linder seems to like the ability of this team, especially offensively. He mentioned Cam Manyawu is the next man up until Walter's returns.

Season ending records

Took a look at season ending records, to kind of give an idea of how Bohl's teams have finished the seasons over the last 10 years. I took a look at the last 5 games of each season and then the last 3 games of each season.

Last 5 games of the season:

2014 - 1 win / 4 losses
2015 - 1 win / 4 losses
2016 - 3 wins / 2 losses (Josh Allen playing)
2017 - 3 wins / 2 losses (Josh Allen playing)
2018 - 4 wins / 1 loss
2019 - 2 wins / 3 losses
2020 - 1 win / 2 losses (Covid year)
2021 - 2 wins / 3 losses
2022 - 3 wins / 2 losses
2023 ?

Overall record in the last 5 games of the season: 20-23

Last 3 games of the season:

2014 - 1 win / 2 losses
2015 - 1 win / 2 losses
2016 - 1 win / 2 losses (Josh Allen playing)
2017 - 1 win / 2 losses (Josh Allen playing)
2018 - 3 wins / 0 losses
2019 - 1 win / 2 losses
2020 - 1 win / 2 losses (Covid year)
2021 - 1 win / 2 losses
2022 - 1 win / 2 losses
2023 ?

Overall record in the last 3 games of the season: 11-16

It was kind of interesting, the year after (2018) Josh Allen left UW, we started out very slow (2-5), but ended up fast (4-1), as we ended the season going 6-6, but with no bowl game. It is pretty obvious that Wyoming has played the last 5 games of the season in a little below break even ball at 47%. However the last 3 games of the season, all except one season during Bohl's tenure Wyoming has finished the last 3 games in the season at a 1 - 2 clip. The lone season that Wyoming wasn't 1-2 in their last 3 games was in 2018 when Wyoming went 3-0 vs SJSU, AF & NM. I am sure much of this can be attributed to the fact that Wyoming plays the majority of their home games in the first part of the season and the majority of their away games in the second half of the season, and this year is no exception.

Of the last 5 games of the season, here are the 5 teams that Wyoming plays this season and Wyoming's record against them if they have faced them during the last 5 games of the season during Bohl's run as HC:

Boise State - Away (Wyo is 1-4 against BSU)
CSU - Home (Wyo is 5 - 1 against CSU)
UNLV - Away (Wyo is 1-1 against UNLV)
Hawaii - Home (Wyo is 1-1 against Hawaii)
Nevada - Away (Wyo is 1 -1 against Nevada)

So if history holds true to form for Bohl and his team, Wyoming will finish 7-5 after having a 5-1 record before the Air Force game, and this squad will be like the vast majority of the other teams under Bohl here at UW. If this team is special as some are saying then this is the time for Wyoming to show that they are a different team than the vast majority of teams that have gone before them during Bohl's tenure as Wyoming's HC.
