Fresno State went on the road and defeated Purdue of the Big Ten Conference in the Bulldogs’ season opener. Fresno State also went on the road and defeated Arizona State of the Pac-12 Conference.

Wyoming’s four victories this season have come against Texas Tech (35-33 in double overtime), over Portland State (31-17), against Appalachian State (22-19) in a dramatic comeback win and against Mountain West rival New Mexico (35-26). The Pokes’ only loss this season came on the road at then No. 4 ranked Texas (31-10). Wyoming entered the fourth quarter against Texas with the game tied at 10-10.

This Week’s National Rankings

The Wyoming Cowboys enter today receiving votes in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll.

The third Mountain West Conference member school receiving votes in both the Associated Press and AFCA polls this week is Air Force.

Wyoming Looks to Build on Four-Game Home Winning Streak, Fresno State Holds 14-Game Winning Streak

The Wyoming Cowboys have won each of their four home games this season and will be looking to extend that home winning streak to five today. The last home game the Cowboys lost was the final home game of the 2022 season when Boise State notched a narrow 20-17 victory over the Pokes in Laramie.

Fresno State enters today’s game with a 14-game winning streak in all games -- home, away and neutral-site. That is the nation’s second longest current winning streak among FBS schools. Only defending National Champion Georgia has a longer current winning streak at 22 games.

Winning the Close Ones

Through the first five games of the 2023 season, both Wyoming and Fresno State have had two of their five games decided by a touchdown or less and the Cowboys and Bulldogs have both won all of those close games. Below is a breakdown of those close finishes in 2023.

Final Scores and

Wyoming Opponents (Date and Location) Margins of Victory

Texas Tech (Sept. 2 in Laramie, Wyo.) W 35-33, +2 (2 OTs)

Purdue (Sept. 2 in West Lafayette, Ind.) W 39-35, +4

Eastern Washington, (Sept. 9 in Fresno, Calif.) W 34-31, +3 (2 OTs)

Comeback Cowboys

It takes a great deal of confidence and perseverance to be able to comeback in a college football game. The 2023 Wyoming Cowboys possess both of those qualities and have put those qualities on display multiple times early this season.

In the season opener, Wyoming trailed Texas Tech 17-0 at the end of the first quarter, and in the second overtime the Pokes trailed 33-27 and faced a fourth and seven at the Texas Tech 11-yard line. UW quarterback Andrew Peasley connected with tight end John Michael Gyllenborg to score the game-tying touchdown and running back Sam Scott scored the game-winning two-point conversion to give Wyoming a 35-33 double-overtime win.

Against Appalachian State, the Cowboys faced their largest deficit of 12 points (19-7) with only 11:42 remaining in the game. But the Pokes battled back. Running back Harrison Waylee exploded for a 75-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 19-14, and then with only 1:52 remaining in the game defensive end DeVonne Harris blocked an App State field-goal attempt and cornerback Jakorey Hawkins picked up the ball and returned it 68 yards for what would be the winning touchdown.

Pokes in the NFL - Week #4

Pokes in the Pros: Week 4

LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/3/23) – Plenty of former University of Wyoming football players logged a successful game during Week 4 of the National Football League. It wasn’t just a stout performance from Josh Allen, but it was Chad Muma bursting onto the scene with his best game of the season and the ever-steady play of Tashaun Gipson on one of the league’s best teams.

Below is a list of the former UW student-athletes and how they did in Week 4.

Chad Muma, Jacksonville Jaguars

Muma boasted his best game of the season, and it wasn’t even close, for Jacksonville on Sunday in London. After starting for the first time this season, he was second on the team in tackles with a season-high seven to go alongside two passes defended in the Jaguars’ 23-7 victory over Atlanta.

Muma now has nine tackles on the season for 2-2 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars remain in London and battle Buffalo in Week 5.

Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Allen was on point in Buffalo’s authoritative 48-20 victory over Miami. He went 21-for-25 for 320 yards and four touchdowns. He added four rushes for 17 yards and one score.

Allen became just the second player ever to have a game where he threw for north of 300 yards, had at least four touchdown passes, rushed for one score and logged a quarterback rating of 158.3. For the season, Allen is 101-for-135 for 1,058 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions.

The 3-1 Bills play Jacksonville in London during Week 5.

Tashaun Gipson, San Francisco 49ers

Gipson backed up his strongest game of the season with another stout performance Sunday in the 49ers’ 35-16 victory over Arizona. He boasted five tackles.

Gipson, who has started all four games, now has 15 tackles for 4-0 San Francisco.

The 49ers host Dallas in Week 5.

Andrew Wingard, Jacksonville Jaguars

Wingard, like Muma, recorded his best game of the season for Jacksonville in London. He had two tackles in the Jaguars’ 23-7 win over the Falcons.

Wingard owns four tackles on the season for the 2-2 Jaguars.

Jacksonville stays in London to play Buffalo in Week 5.

Logan Wilson, Cincinnati Bengals

Wilson had a mild day, in comparison to what he’s done this season, Sunday in the Bengals’ 27-3 loss at Tennessee. He recorded four tackles.

Wilson has started all four games for the 1-3 Bengals. He’s registered 26 tackles, two tackles for loss and two interceptions on the season.

The Bengals travel to Arizona in Week 5.

Carl Granderson, New Orleans Saints

Granderson had another successful game in New Orleans’ 27-3 loss to Tampa Bay. He carded four tackles.

Granderson, who has started all four games, lays claim to 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, six quarterback hits and one forced fumble this season.

The 2-2 Saints travel to New England in Week 5.

Marcus Epps, Las Vegas Raiders

Epps keeps consistently putting up good games for Las Vegas. He registered four tackles in the Raiders’ 24-17 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers.

Epps, who has started all four games, has recorded 19 tackles and two tackles for losses for the 1-3 Raiders.

Las Vegas hosts Green Bay in Week 5.

Mike Purcell, Denver Broncos

Purcell didn’t log a stat Sunday in the Broncos’ 31-28 victory at Chicago. He lays claim to three tackles and two quarterback hits this season for 1-3 Denver.

The Broncos host the New York Jets in Week 5.

Tyler Hall, Las Vegas Raiders

Hall didn’t play in Las Vegas’ 24-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He currently has DEV status.

Las Vegas hosts Green Bay in Week 5.

More information on the college play-offs...

It is being discussed what will happen to the PAC 2 after everything is all said and done. Well they would no longer be considered a P5 conference just by themselves. But a lot of it depends upon which play-off model they chose when and if they join with the MWC. Which playoff system they choose, either a 6 - 6 model or a 5 - 7 model?

The discussion is that if and when the PAC 2 merge with the MWC, they would not be considered a P5 conference but in the 6 & 6 set-up of the playoffs the 6th strongest conference will get the 6th spot in the play-offs and be an automatic qualifier. They are saying that the PAC/MWC would be the 6th strongest conference and would automatically get the 6th spot. If they go to the 5 - 7 model then the Top 5 conferences would be automatic qualifiers and everyone else will have to fight over the last 7 spots. There WILL BE a lot of discussion and a lot of arguing about this point when the College Playoff committee meets and it will get interesting.

Today, because of the crap that Hooked on the BIG 12 is putting out, Monty verified AGAIN that OSU and WSU are not being considered for an invitation to the BIG 12.

Muma's having good game in London

Grabbed dinner between the football and volleyball game yesterday and sat next to a guy at the bar. He just moved to Laramie from the Jacksonville area and quickly became a Cowboy fan. He told me that Dewey was one of his favorite Jacksonville players. I mentioned Chad Muma to him and he said he was getting up early today to watch the game and he'd look for Muma. Muma came through with a good game!
