Review of the Cowgirl Soccer Season

Glancing back at a historical and unforgettable Cowgirl soccer season

LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/16/22) – The University of Wyoming soccer team enjoyed a joyous 2022 campaign. The Cowgirls closed the season strong, broke records and made a plethora of pleasant memories to look back on, as they head into the 2023 season with plenty of momentum.

“This group never stopped believing, never stopped grinding, and they always knew they were capable of greatness,” Corbin said. “Watching them step into that and making it a reality for themselves was such a privilege to be able to witness.”

Greatness this season came in the form of a Mountain West Conference regular-season crown. The Cowgirls shared the title with New Mexico and San Jose State.

Capturing that regular-season championship wasn’t easy. Wyoming not only had to win its last three matches, but also needed some outside help, and it received it when the San Diego State and New Mexico played to a 0-0 tie in the regular-season finale.

That result locked up just the second regular-season title in program history and first since 2018. Following the Aztec-Lobo result was a San Jose State 1-0 victory over Fresno State that gave the Cowgirls the No. 1 seed.

Wyoming rode that momentum into the MW Tournament. It defeated San Diego State in the semifinals to make its third-ever appearance in the title match.

The No. 1 seed also gives the Cowgirls the privilege of hosting its first-ever 2023 MW Tournament at the Madrid Sports Complex.

“Earning the right to host the Mountain West Conference Tournament next year is so fun,” Corbin said. “It’s not only going to mean so much to our program but the Wyoming community, as well.”

That’s the prize that awaits Wyoming in the 2023 season. But for the time being they can reflect on the history it made during the 2022 season.

First and foremost, Wyoming’s improvement from finishing 11th in the final 2021 MW standings to finishing first in the final 2022 standings is the best single-season improvement in league history. The Cowgirls were 4-7-0 in conference play in 2021 and 6-3-1 in 2022.

More than half of those conference victories were accomplished in thrilling fashion. Wyoming logged four come-from-behind wins, which were the most-ever in a single season in school history. The Cowgirls never had more than two such victories in any one season.

Three of those four rallies occurred in the 88th minute or later. All three go-ahead goals were off the foot of senior Jamie Tatum.

She carved her name into the record books in more than one location. The Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year ascended to second in career goals with 22, second in career points with 57, third in career game-winning goals with seven, and fifth in career assists with 13.

Tatum was also a key cog in what was the fastest consecutive goals scored in school history. She netted a goal just 19 seconds before junior Alyssa Bedard did in a game against North Dakota State this season.

Bedard and Tatum registered goals just 1:10 from one another in a victory at Colorado State. That marked the fifth-fastest consecutive goals scored in program history.

Tatum and Bedard were both First-Team All-MW selections. In addition to those postseason honors, Corbin was named MW Coach of the Year and freshman Alyssa Glover was named to the MW All-Newcomer Team.

Those three aforementioned Cowgirls return along with a host of other teammates. In fact, Wyoming will return all 11 starters and many more significant reserves as it looks to pick up where it left off in 2023.

“The foundation is about as strong as it could get,” Corbin said. “We are going to have a lot of seniors in the group next year – a lot of players that have been here since our staff took over – that have a clear picture of what the expectations are and how hard it is to get to where we got.

“That’s a big piece of the puzzle.”

What happened to Peasley?

Missed where Peasley got hurt. Reason why I ask is that Canvas stadium is a joke. First they don’t take cash at the concessions and my kiddos came back to tell me to go with them. Stood in line for the entire 2nd quarter trying to watch a small tv located in between the concession stands. 4 kids working moving at a snail’s pace.

The stadium looks nice on the tv but is poorly organized and isn’t built to get fans moving.

Take War Memorial any day.

Go Pokes!

The band at UW basketball games!

Its been said many times but why is it so hard for the Band to play the fight song after a big run or a forece timeout by the other team. They played Cowboy Joe 2 times in first half of Sundays game, when they came out and when they went to the locker room at halftime! Somebody get a fricking clue over there good lord!! And if you think UW has a lot of announcements/on field presentations, go to a Sheep game.............way worse but atleast they play good music and seem to have a script!

Media Rights Watch

It sort of got missed, but C-USA signed a new media rights deal last week with CBS and ESPN. After the conference was raided and then added schools like Liberty, Jacksonville State, Kenesaw State, etc., the league opened up a new media rights process to get out of their existing deal with Stadium. Under their new contract, each of the 10 schools will receive about $750k/year. In exchange, they agree to hold their conference games on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. No Saturday conference games.

For comparison, the current MW deal through 2026 pays each school around $4 million/year with some late kickoffs and some Fridays.

The C-USA deal could be looked at as a sort of Ghost of Christmas Future if our league isn’t thoughtful in how it approaches expansion discussions. In terms of national profile and television eyeballs, the MW without Boise and SDSU is not that dissimilar to the new-look C-USA. The MW without those schools would certainly still be better, but the gap wouldn’t be as great as I think many folks think it might be. If we lose those schools and aren’t able to add anything interesting, our next media rights deal in 2026 could look a lot like the deal C-USA entered this week.

I continue to lean toward the idea that SDSU and Boise aren’t going anywhere, or that it’s at least as likely that we pick up some Pac-12 leftovers as it is that we lose our higher profile schools - but the stakes are certainly high.

Have we seen better QB/Offensive play based on Statistics?

2021 stats, completiion percentage was 54.5......162 yds per game. Rushing 211 yds per game

2022 through 10 games completion percentage 53.7.........139 yds per game. Rushing 188 yds per game

Williams through 9 games rushed for 482 yards at a 6.7 yds/pg....through 10 games Peasley has rushed for 325 yards at 4.9 yds/pg.

Over all scoring in 2022 is 23.2ppg as in 2021 scored 25.4 ppg

So has anything really changed with the QB play?? WYO still has a long way to go in regards to QB play/production

Josh Allen had a bad day.. Thats life.

Josh Allen did not practice all week. The Bills Coach would not say anything about his ability to play in the Vikes game. He kept it a secret all week if He would play. So I don't know what went on Saturday but He did not pass or practice through Friday... That probably was why He was OFF His normal MO... He looked off from the get go...

Make no mistake about it, The Buffalo program and Fan base are living and dying on Josh Allen's Football talent.. They raved that He played but if He makes a mistake or two they all slam him.... They should have just started the second string QB that took all the snaps all week long and then if He didn't pan out put in Josh... Anyone that knows Josh Allen's Football MO would know He is going to go balls to the wall... Yea, He looked off. but all those mistakes were not JA doing... Its over and I hope He will be in Practice all week before the game with the Browns...

I WILL TRUST IN COWBOY JOSH ALLEN

It won't hurt the Bills that the Vikes beat them, they just have to start winning and more than anything get all those players healthy again... They are missing a lot of No 1 players and when they all get back playing they will dominate again and they have most of their divsion games to be played in Buffalo... You better believe He will be at it and working His tail off getting ready to kill. I believe that...

And I love you guys..
