ST. THOMAS, USVI (Nov. 19, 2022) – The Cowboys face off against Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake on Sunday afternoon in the semifinals of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. The contest is set for a 3:45 p.m. MT and is the fifth meeting all-time between the two schools.

The contest will be televised on ESPN3 for the entirety of the tournament that runs through Monday.

Fans can listen to the watch the contest, as well as follow stats on GoWyo.com. The contest will be broadcast live on radio over the 26 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network, as Reece Monaco will have the call with Kevin McKinney on color.

About The Teams
The Cowboys head into the contest with a 3-1 overall record after defeating Howard by a score of 78-71 in the first round. The Pokes are averaging 82.8 points per game and are allowing 71 points per night. The Pokes are shooting 46 percent from the field with the opponents shooting 44 percent. The Cowboys are one of the top teams in the nation shooting the three-ball averaging 11 per game.

Drake has begun the season in fine form. The Bulldogs are 3-0 and winning by an average margin of 16 points per game. The Bulldogs are fresh off a 25-win 2021-22 season and were on of the preseason favorites to win the Missouri Valley Conference this year.

The Bulldogs hit 51.1 percent of their field-goal attempts and that includes 33.8 percent accuracy from 3-point land. Drake holds its opponents to 39 percent shooting from the floor and 31 percent from deep.

Wyoming leads the all-time series against Drake 4-1 with the last meeting coming in 2017. The Cowboys won that contest in Laramie by a score of 96-89 in double overtime.

The Cowboys head into the contest with a 2-1 overall record with wins over Colorado Christian and Nicholls State. Wyoming fell in their last contest on Sunday to Southeastern Louisiana by a score of 76-72. Wyoming is averaging 84.3 points per game and are allowing 71.0 per night. The Pokes are shooting 42 percent from the field with opponents shooting 43 percent. Wyoming is adding 12.3 triples per game on the season, which is tops in the MW and No. 12 in the nation. The Bison head into the contest with a 2-3 overall record after falling to James Madison by a score of 95-69 on Tuesday. The Bison are shooting 47 percent from the field, but opponents are shooting 51 percent and 41 percent from the three-point line

ST. THOMAS, USVI (Nov. 16, 2022) – The Cowboys shot 62 percent from the field for the best percentage since 2014 in a 78-71 comeback win over Howard in the opening round of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Friday afternoon in the USVI Sports and Fitness Center in St., Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Guard Hunter Maldonado scored a season-high 28 points in the contest, as Wyoming trailed by wight in the contest.



“I was proud of the effort tonight from our guys,” Wyoming head coach Jeff Linder said. “After coming off a tough game against SELA sometimes you need a spark and I thought tonight in the second half we showed what we could do. We showed a lot more collective grit and toughness. I thought DuSell and Kyman gave us that tonight, as they haven’t played a lot this season but came into the game in the second half and did a tremendous job."



Wyoming’s field goal percentage was the highest since shooting 62 percent against Northern Colorado in the season opener in 2014. Wyoming was 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. Howard shot 46 percent from the field and were held to 39 percent in the second half. The Bison had an advantage on the glass 28-25.



Maldonado’s 28 points marked his 24th career game with 20 or more points. He shot 10-of-10 from the field. Guard Ethan Anderson added 11 points for the Cowboys tying with Maldonado for the team lead with four rebounds. He also added three assists. Guard Jake Kyman added nine points off the bench alongside Max Agbonkpolo.



The Pokes would use a 5-0 run to build a 10-5 lead in the opening four minutes of play. Guard Brendan Wenzel did the damage for the Pokes with a pair of threes with Anderson and Maldonado adding layups. But the Bison would battle back with a pair of three-pointers.



Howard would continue the hot shooting lead by Jelani Williams, as he helped the Bison build a 22-20 lead halfway through the first half. A free throw from Agbonkpolo and a layup from Maldonado would give the Cowboys a 23-22 lead with 9:54 left in the first half.



Wyoming held the Bison scoreless for over four minutes but could only build the lead to four points at 26-22. Howard then went on a 9-0 run to take a 31-26 advantage with just under four minutes left in the first half. Forward Jeremiah Oden ended the scoreless drought for the Pokes and Maldonado added a slam for a 31-30 game for Howard with 2:13 left in the half.



Howard would make a push late finishing the half on a 7-2 run for a 38-32 lead at the half. Wyoming shot 60 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes but recorded eight turnovers/ Howard shot 52 percent and hit six three-pointers in the half.



The Pokes battled back within a bucket thanks to a pair of baskets from Maldonado to open the second frame. Agbonkpolo hit a triple for a 42-41 game near the 16-minute mark of the second frame. Kyman and Anderson would then attack the basket and help the Pokes make it a 47-44 game for the Brown and Gold with 14:10 remaining in the game.



Howard would take the advantage back with 12 minutes left, but Maldonado added a layup for a 52-51 lead with under 11 minutes left in the game. The two teams would then exchange the lead over the next two minutes until Howard hit a three pointer for a 58-54 game with 8:45 left.



A Maldonado highlight reel slam and a bucket from Anderson gave the Pokes a 61-60 lead with 6:27 left in the game. Maldonado would make it a three-point game with a pair of free throws with under six minutes left. But the Bison would battle back once again to take a 64-63 lead with 4:27 left.



The Pokes would take back the lead and build it to three-points at 67-64 with 2:59 left on a pair of freebies from Kyman. Maldonado would make it a 69-64 game with 1:46 at the free throw line, but the lead was cut back to three points seconds later. Guard Xavier DuSell hit a three from the corner off a pass from Maldonado for a 74-66 lead with 44 seconds left.



Anderson would all but seal the game with a steal and a slam, as Wyoming took the contest 78-71.

The Bison were led by four scorers in double-figures led by Elijah Hawkins with 17 points. Steve Settle added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.



The Cowboys advance to the semifinals to take on Drake at 3:45 MT on ESPN3.

Laramie, Wyo. (Nov. 15, 2022) -- It will be a battle for the Mountain Division lead this Saturday in Wyoming’s War Memorial Stadium when the Wyoming Cowboys, 5-1 in conference play and 7-3 overall, will host the Boise State Broncos, 6-0 in the MW and 7-3 overall. The game will kick off at 5 p.m., Mountain Time on Saturday.



Saturday’s game stacks up very similar to the 2016 season when the two teams were battling for the Mountain Division title. Wyoming hosted Boise State in that 2016 game and came out on top 30-28 and went on to capture the Mountain Division title. The 2016 game came earlier in the season on Oct. 29. Wyoming was 3-0 in conference play and 5-2 at the time of the 2016 meeting, while Boise State was 3-0 in the MW, 7-0 overall and was ranked No. 13 in both national polls. The Cowboys went on to host the MW Championship Game, post an 8-6 record and earn a berth in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, Calif. Boise State ended the season 10-3 and played in the Cactus Bowl in Phoenix, Ariz.

Winning Ways -- Wyoming Wins Seven Games for Fifth Time in Bohl Era

Wyoming’s winning ways have continued this season. The Cowboys won their seventh game of the 2022 season at Colorado State on Nov. 12. That is the fifth time in the nine seasons Craig Bohl has coached the Cowboys that the Pokes have won seven or more games.



UW also won seven games in 2021 and won eight games in 2019, 2017 and 2016.

In the 10 games Wyoming has played thus far this season, four of those 10 games have been decided by a touchdown or less and the Cowboys have won all four of those games.

Mantra of Going 1-0 Each Week Continues for Cowboys –

Those 1-0 Weeks are Growing Into Streaks

Wyoming’s mantra this season has been to go 1-0 each week, and that remains the focus. But the 1-0 weeks have led to a couple streaks developing.



Wyoming currently has a four-game winning streak, second longest in the Mountain West to Fresno State’s five-game streak.



The Pokes also have a three-game road winning streak entering this week, having won their last three road games -- at New Mexico, at Hawai’i and at Colorado State.



Home Sweet Home, UW 4-1 in Home Games This Season

and Will Play First Home Game in a Month This Saturday

This week’s home game against Boise State will be the first time in a month since the Cowboys played a home game.



Following a home victory over Utah State on Oct. 22, Wyoming traveled to Hawai’i, had a Bye Week and traveled to Colorado State. The Pokes won both of those road games and will now host Boise State this Saturday, Nov. 19.



Wyoming is 4-1 in home games this season, with its only home loss to San Jose State on Oct. 1. UW has defeated Tulsa, Northern Colorado, Air Force and Utah State in its other home games this season.



Cowboy Linebacker Easton Gibbs Among Top Tacklers in the Mountain West and the Nation, Nearing 100-Tackle Mark for the 2022 Season

Wyoming sophomore linebacker Easton Gibbs leads the Cowboys in tackles this season with 88 tackles. He is averaging 8.8 tackles per game to rank No. 3 in the Mountain West and No. 38 nationally.



A year ago, he tallied 90 tackles, nearly reaching the elite 100-tackle mark.Gibbs enters this week with 220 career tackles.



Hoyland Nearing the Wyoming School Record for Most Field Goals in a Single Season

Cowboy sophomore place-kicker John Hoyland will enter this week’s Boise State game with 19 made field goals for the 2022 season.



With one more field goal, Hoyland will tie the school record of 20 made field goals in a single-season currently held by Cory Wedel, who made 20 field goals in the 1996 season, and J.D. Wallum.

We have played them close for many years now. On a brisk Laradise evening, the young Cowboy team finds a way to win and keep us on this championship dream for one more week. 2 point conversion for the extra drama for the season and a game for all ages in Laramie.

Yes the field is stormed again, but why not ...it makes for a shortcut to the car.

Any idea how to get tickets to this thing?

Last year he pops off about how great Sargent and DQ James are and how it’s going to take a lot to keep them off the field as true freshman. Fast forward a year later and James has only a handful of plays and Sargent hasn’t seen the field at all (too my knowledge).

He’s always blowing smoke.

I want to update this to add the quarterbacks. All summer and fall practice it was Hank Gibbs looks the part; he's big and strong and knows the offense. Then Svaboda signs - who no one recruited - and Bohl makes him out to be the next Josh Allen and that he has a chance to start. Next thing you know Peasley is the starter and Clemons, never mentioned once, is the back up and the other two are nowhere to be found.

Pure speculation and upsets occur but I am thinking 16 of the 5 win teams make it for sure to at least 6 wins and at least 3 of the 4 win teams as well. The final tally could be as high as the upper 80’s or just below the needed 84. I am going with 83 at the minimum.

Beating CSU - how big was that? HUGE

Why was beating CSU a huge victory? It is because the MWC has the potential to get 8 teams eligible. If we do not close out with another win, getting to 5 wins keeps us ahead of AFA and USU in the event those teams get to 5. USU could win out and get to 6 conference wins bypassing us if we stay at 5. AFA cannot win more than 5. A 4-4 record this year could have left us the odd team out of a bowl slot.

Eligibility that could benefit the MWC is the final totals from the AAC, CUSA and MAC and SBC. That is where the “group of 5” have tie-ins to fill spots. It looks like there could be enough AAC, MWC and SBC teams to fill the 4 G5 bowls and that means a MWC finish of 5th or better has to be placed before any other MWC team can be placed.

There is a very small chance of that the Guaranteed Rate bowl could be short a B10 or B12 team depending on the final eligibility numbers and who is in the CFP. I would not hold count on that happening but at least at 7 wins if there are at-large spots needed 7 win teams have to be placed over 6 win teams thereby leaving 6-6 P5 teams hoping for a spot.

That is why getting to 7 is huge and putting ourselves in position to be a top 5 MWC. Winning in conference has its benefits.

The Mountain West having a good non-conference performance will also bolster the Cowboys chances. MW is off to a good start early on.
