EL PASO, Texas (Dec. 21, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys will faceoff against the UTEP Miners in the championship game of the 2023 Weststar Dan Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Thursday at 7 p.m. It is the 67th meeting between the two schools and the first since 2018.



Fans can listen to the contest, as well as follow stats on GoWyo.com. The game will be streamed on the Sun Bowl Association YouTube Channel and will be broadcast live on radio over the 26 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network, as Keith Kelley on the call and Kevin McKinney on color.



Kot in the 20’s: Akuel Kot poured in 22 points against South Dakota State. He added 24 points against Weber State for back-to-back games with 20 or more points. He has scored 20 or more points in four games this season. He is averaging 16.5 points per game and has 1,894 points and is six away from 1,900.



Walters Makes Debut: Forward Mason Walters made his debut on Wednesday. He added 12 points forth Cowboys in 26 minutes. He was named the NAIA National Player of the Year last season.



From Behind The Arc: The Pokes shot 50 percent from behind the arc against South Dakota State. It marked the fourth time in the last five games that Wyoming has shot 50 percent or better from behind the arc. Wyoming leads the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 43.4 percent.



Dominating The Glass: The Pokes dominated the glass against South Dakota State. The Pokes outrebounded the Jackrabbits 40-24 and were +16. It was the largest differential for the Pokes this season and Wyoming has been +10 on the glass in four games this season.



Two in the 20’s: The Cowboys has two players score in the 20’s against Weber State. Akuel Kot scored 24 points and fellow guard Sam Griffin added 22 points. It marks the third time this season, Wyoming has see that duo do that in a game. They did so against against Northern New Mexico and Furman.



600 Club: Guard Sam Girffin went over 600 career made field goals against Weber State. He now has 605 in his college career. Kot got to 600 against South Dakota State. he now has 605 in his career with the Cowboys.



Kot Has Best Game as Cowboy: Guard Akuel Kot recorded a season-high 24 points against Weber State. It marked the third game this season that he has 20 or more points. He recorded a season-high 10 field goals in the contest against the Wildcats.



DeWeese Makes Return to El Paso: Associate head coach Ken DeWeese will make his return to UTEP on Wednesday, He was an assistant coach for the Miners prior to joining Jeff Linder at Northern Colorado.



Back to Texas: A trio of Cowboys will make their return to the Lone Star State on Wednesday. Guard Brendan Wenzel is a native of San Antonio. Forward Caden Powell played his high school ball in Waco and guard Akuel Kot is a native of Amarillo. Associate head coach Ken DeWeese is a native of Texas and graduate of Mary-Hardin Baylor. Head coach Jeff Linder spent time in Texas at Midland Junior College.



Behind The Arc: The Cowboys have been solid from the arc all season. Wyoming is shooting 43.3 percent from deep on the year, which ranks first in the nation. Wyoming has shot 40 percent or better from behind the arc in seven games this season and 50 percent five times



Double-Digit Comeback: The Cowboys recorded a comeback win over SFA. The Pokes were down by 10 points in the game and it was the largest comeback since rally back from 10 points against Utah State on Feb. 8, 2022 in Laramie.

The Wyoming Cowboy Football program announced 30 commitments on the first day of the 2024 early signing period on Wednesday. Wyoming's early signing class includes 21 signees and nine preferred walk-ons. The class is made up of three FBS/junior college transfers and 27 high school recruits.

"We're excited about where we're at with this class," said University of Wyoming incoming head football coach Jay Sawvel. "Our entire staff has put in a lot of work, including Coach Bohl, from last January up through this week. "Now as we go into the next phase of recruiting, there are a some transfer opportunities we need to continue to work on. We are very, very excited about this class, and we feel it supplements and augments a really good class from last year."

2024 Football Signing Periods

The early signing period for college football teams began on Wednesday, Dec. 20 and will run through Friday, Dec. 22.

The mid-year junior college signing period also began on Wednesday and will conclude on Monday, Jan. 15, 2023.

Signings of transfers from four-year schools through the NCAA Transfer Portal opened on Monday, Dec. 4 and runs through Tuesday, Jan. 2.

The regular signing period for football for the 2024 recruiting class will begin on Wed., Feb. 7 and will run through Monday, April 1.2024

EL PASO, Texas (Dec. 21, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys dropped a battle to an old foe on Thursday falling to UTEP by a score of 78-67 in the championship game of the Weststar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. The contest was a physical one with 52 fouls being called between the two teams.



“We knew they played hard, and this is a hard place to play. I felt we took a big step yesterday, but to win a road game you have to have a level of maturity. It will be a learning opportunity. We have done some good things in the preseason. Our guys fight and we were right there, but we couldn’t get over the hump.



The Pokes shot 34 percent from the field on the night, as Wyoming came into the game as the nation’s top three-point percentage but were held to only 22 percent on the night. UTEP shot 48 percent from the field. The Cowboys held a 35-30 lead on the glass, but UTEP scored 22 points off turnovers in the contest.



Wyoming was led by Mason Walters with 16 points for a season-high and most in his Wyoming career. Akuel Kot added 14 points in the contest. Brendan Wenzel added 11 points for the Cowboys along with 11 points from Sam Griffin. Caden Powell added eight points and led team with 11 rebounds.



The Miners got off to an early 8-4 lead on the Cowboys in the opening five minutes. Wyoming struggled from the field going 2-of-8 from the floor. UTEP extended the lead to 12-6 and kept the Pokes scoreless for over two minutes until Kot added a triple for a 12-9 contest with 12 minutes left in the half.



Wyoming would make it a 12-11 game, but the lead was pushed back to three-points at 14-11 halfway through the opening frame. Wyoming would use a 14-2 run over nearly five minutes to take a 20-14 lead with under eight minutes left in the half. Walters was key from the line during the stretch along with Kot from behind the arc.



UTEP would battle back to make it a two-point game, but a three-pointer from Sam Griffin pushed the lead back to five points. But the Cowboys went scoreless for the final 3:25 of the first half, as UW took a 26-25 lead into the half. Wyoming shot only 32 percent from the field in the frame with UTEP shooting 37 percent.



The Miners would take the lead in the early minutes of the second half using a pair of three pointers. Wyoming took a brief lead back, but 6-0 run by UTEP made it a 41-36 game with under 14 minutes left in the contest.



The Miners took a seven-point lead at 50-43 on a transition slam with under 10 minutes left in the contest. Wyoming went over seven minutes without a basket, as UTEP built an 11-point lead at 62-51. Kobe Newton ended the drought with a three-pointer.



The Pokes tried to break the UTEP advantage, but the Miners took the game and the championship by a score of xx-xx.

The Cowboys return to action on Dec. 30 wrapping up non-conference play on the road at BYU. The contest is slated for a 4 p.m. start on ESPN+.

A good QB, lockdown CornerBacks and good strenght and conditioning coach. Was he successful? Did we really have a "lockdown" CB who could play man to man on every snap? I dont know enough abou the SC coach to evaluate, but our team did look like an FBS team with some size.

Sawvel has stated not much will change on Defense so now we wait and see who he hires as OC. UW will still run the ball and lets see if he does what he says he wants on offense, to be able to pass the ball at any time. Looks like the same mold of recruiting class we have seen the last 10 years lets see what type of recruits Sawvel goes after for the next recruiting class or what type of Offensive players he may still land in the portal the next few months. If he does nothing to get "skill players with speed" then the Offense will not change much either.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 21, 2023) – For the third consecutive season the Wyoming Cowboys will be playing in a bowl game, which is the first time that has happened in Wyoming school history. The Cowboys have accepted an invitation to the 2023 Bartstool Sports Arizona Bowl, marking the second consecutive year the Pokes will play in Tucson and the third time in the past five seasons. Wyoming will face the University of Toledo Rockets in this year's Arizona Bowl.

The 2023 Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl will kick off on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2:30 p.m., Mountain Time in Tucson, Ariz. Wyoming will bring an 8-4 overall record and a 5-3 Mountain West Conference record into the game. Toledo finished its season with an 11-2 overall mark and an 8-0 record in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

The 2023 Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl will be telecast live nationally on the CW and on Barstool TV.

The game will be broadcast on radio over the 26 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network, with Keith Kelley (play-by-play), Kevin McKinney (color analyst) and Randy Welniak (sideline analyst) describing the action.



All-MW Cowboys: The Mountain West Conference announced its 2023 All-Mountain West football teams on Nov. 28 and eight Wyoming Cowboys were honored. The team was selected in voting by the 12 Mountain West head coaches and media members covering the league.



For the fifth consecutive season, Wyoming has a linebacker on the All-Mountain West First Team. For the second straight season Wyoming middle linebacker Easton Gibbs was named to the First Team. Gibbs was joined on the First Team by Cowboy offensive tackle Frank Crum, who earned First Team honors for the first time in his career. Wyoming defensive tackle Jordan Bertagnole was voted to the Second Team. It was also Bertagnole’s first All-Conference honor.



Five Cowboys achieved Honorable Mention honors. Those five are: safety Wyett Ekeler, quarterback Andrew Peasley, running back Harrison Waylee, tight end Treyton Welch and wide receiver Wyatt Wieland. It marked the second consecutive season that Peasley and Welch earned Honorable Mention honors. Ekeler, Waylee and Wieland all received Honorable Mention recognition for the first time.



Cowboy Bowl History: The Cowboys are 9-9 all-time in Bowl games dating back to their first contest against Washington & Lee in the 1951 Gator Bowl. Wyoming has won three of their last four bowl games dating back to 2017 and are 3-2 in Bowl Games under head coach Craig Bohl. It marks the fourth time in the last five trips to a Bowl that Wyoming has played against a team from the MAC. Wyoming owns wins over Central Michigan (37-14 in 2017) and Kent State (52-38 in 2021) and fell last season against Ohio in overtime by a score of 30-27.



Against the MAC: The Cowboys are 11-6 all-time against teams from the Mid-American Conference. Since 1996 when the Wyoming Cowboys first played a Mid-American Conference team in Western Michigan, the Cowboys are 11-5 all-time against current teams from the MAC. UW is 5-3 against MAC foes in Laramie, 4-2 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites. Wyoming fell in overtime last season against Ohio in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl 30-27. Wyoming will meet Toledo for the third time, which is tied for the most games against a MAC team with Ohio and Central Michigan.



Forcing Turnovers: The Cowboys head into the bowl game ranked seventh in the nation and second in the mountain West in turnover margin at 0.83. The group also rank No 20 in the nation in turnovers gained with 21, as Wyoming ranks sixth in the nation in fumbles recovered with 11 on the season. Wyoming has 10 interceptions on the season.



Against The Run: The Cowboys have been solid against the run all season allowing 144.6 per game. The Pokes have allowed opponents to rush for under 100 yards in six games this season including three of the last four games. Nevada recorded only 18 rushing yards in the last contest. In the month of November, Wyoming allowed only 76 yards rushing per game.

Offense Over Last Two Games: The Cowboy offense has been solid to close out the regular season. The group has averaged 440.5 yards of total offense in those two games with 198.5 yards rushing and 242.0 yards passing. The group has also averaged 22 first downs per game and have scored 42 points per game. Wyoming has scored six rushing scores and had five passing scores in the last two contests.



Ekeler Named MW Defensive Player of the Week: Wyoming safety Wyett Ekeler racked up another Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honor after Wyoming’s win over Nevada in the regular season finale on Saturday. He was also named MW Defensive Player of the Week following Wyoming’s win over New Mexico. Ekeler, a native of Windsor, Colo. finished the contest with five tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. He also added an interception and returned it 38-yards or a score breaking five tackles in the process for the first interception for a score since Cam Stone did so against New Mexico in 2022.



Head Coach Craig Bohl to Coach Last Game: University of Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl announced on Dec. 6 that he is retiring as head coach of the Wyoming Cowboys. Bohl’s retirement will end his 10-year tenure leading the Cowboys, which is the longest of any head football coach in school history. He will coach the Cowboys through this year’s Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl on Dec. 30 in Tucson, Ariz. Bohl steps away from Wyoming Football after one of the most sustained periods of success in program history, including: more bowl victories (3) and more bowl appearances (6) than any coach in school history; six winning seasons -- second most of any Wyoming coach; and more NFL players developed than at any time in program history.

Like a dormant but rumbling volcano ready to explode, Florida State is about ready to blow up the ACC. Pissed about being snubbed by the CFP, and like any good blame-shifter the Seminole brass has deemed the ACC an unworthy home as it cost them a chance to play for the CFP championship. Will Chief Osceola along with The Tiger ride to the SEC? Will this then give those two Oregon State Beaver twitter-erss heart palpations that the ACC would then look to the Great Northwest for Oregon State and Washington State to join their other west coast brethren so as to stretch from coast to coast while adding to the conjecture as to why the Beavs and Cougs only want to fool around with the MW and not be betrothed?

In all seriousness, I love college football but it is a shell of what it used to be. Lets stop the pretense a let these top 64 schools break off and do their the own thing. Hire a commissioner, negotiate their own TV deal, set their own requirements for entry - historical success, AD budget, football budget, stadium size, NIL requirement amount, etc. Let the next group of 42 to 64 do the same.

Cream of the MW Football Programs

I believe that the top of the MW are overall better teams than the bottom 2 or 3 teams of the Power 5 conference members. The PAC2 are going to take a hit from the fact that with coaching changes, etc, they could easily be knocked down a peg to be more equal, talent wise, to the cream of the MW. We have already seen some of the PAC2 players bolt to the portal. If the PAC2 only needs 6 teams form a new PAC8, I think that that group of teams could qualify for inclusion in the new Power 4 league to form the new, once again, Power 5. Sooner than later, I think that the Power 5 will become their own league governed by their autonomous selves and not under the rule or thumb of the NCAA any longer. NIL will rule and most teams’ players will be compensated either from a collective or thru a pool of monies from the new P5 revenue sources (ESPN, FOX, and new or up and coming steaming companies). Players could be compensated based on grade level, from their universities, and then bonused thereafter from collectives based on performance, behavior, GPA’s, etc.

After the 2024 football season and possibility the 2025 season as well, I think at that time the PAC2 will have all of their olympic sports aligned with schools geographically close to them (WCC, WAC, California State Univ. conferences , etc), and then they will poach the cream of the MW to begin a new PAC8 football only conference. You can pick the top 6 yourselves. There will be a varied list of criteria to be considered a cream of the crop program. Records, facilities, TV eyes, etc. If a cream school needs to have an $ incentive to join, they could ‘borrow’ the funds from the PAC2 coffers and payback on an annual basis.

Contributor Hirta and Ian are obviously closer to the head shed than most of us all. I don’t know of Hirta’s background but I respect his and certainly Ian’s input, wisdom and insight into the PAC2/MW deal. Respect does not always mean trust however. Respect your knowledge,(or little knowledge in my case) of the subject but don’t trust your discourse ( spew in my case) based on that knowledge.

I respect Burman’s (it hurts my soul to say that) and Gloria Nevarez’ position of leadership on the whole deal. But don’t trust what little they have said to come to fruition. I do sense some hesitancy in Burman’s opinion because of his most recent comments on the matter.

Therefore, I don’t think the PAC2 schools will form a conference with all of the MW, either thru merger or dissolving the MW as a whole group then integrating to become a PAC14 football conference. I think that decision makers at NV and NM have felt somewhat the same way with their recent coaching hires. Upgrades, but alas, it may be too late. The PAC2 will poach the cream only for a new PAC8, then possibility fill with other schools, later on. NMSU, Tulsa for example. Where will UW be??

We have all read that Gloria Nevarez has been working with the PAC2 to solve their problems and it is evident so with the combined football schedules. Some have remarked that she has bent over backward to accommodate, and problem solve, keeping the MW best interests in the forefront of discussions. Hopefully, she will not be bent over frontwards.

I’ll pull my head out of my rear after a while most likely. But until then, I’ll be pessimistic of what is or is not happening.

Pokes in the Pros: Week 15

LARAMIE, Wyo. (12/19/23) – Andrew Wingard gave his old stomping grounds some good publicity during the Sunday Night Football. Not only did the former University of Wyoming football player shout out his alma mater during pre-game introductions, but he also put together a career night.

Wingard piled up a team-high 11 tackles in the Jaguars’ 23-7 loss to Baltimore. For the season, he boasts 42 tackles, two passes defended and an interception for 8-6 Jacksonville.

Wingard wasn’t the only former Wyoming student-athlete to perform well for his National Football League franchise. Below is a list of the Pokes and how they did in Week 15.

Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Allen didn’t have to do much in the Bills’ 31-10 win over Dallas. He went 7-for-15 for 94 yards with one touchdown. Allen added 24 yards on the ground on eight carries with one score.

For the season, he is 325-for-490 for 3,541 yards with 26 touchdowns and 14 picks. Allen has added 398 yards on 80 carries with 11 scores for 8-6 Buffalo.

The Bills travel to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16.

Logan Wilson, Cincinnati Bengals

Wilson had a nice day in the Bengals’ 27-24 win over Minnesota. He recorded seven tackles and one quarterback hit.

For the season, Wilson has 114 tackles – which ranks 15th in the league – four tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, three interceptions, seven passes defended and four quarterback hits for 8-6 Cincinnati.

The Bengals travel to Pittsburgh in Week 16.

Tyler Hall, Las Vegas Raiders

Hall enjoyed one of his better games in the Raiders’ 63-21 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. He made three tackles.

On the year, Hall owns 20 tackles for 6-8 Las Vegas.

The Raiders travel to Kansas City in Week 16.

Carl Granderson, New Orleans Saints

Granderson, once again, stuffed the stat sheet in the Saints’ 24-6 win over the New York Giants. He racked up three tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack and one quarterback hit.

For the season, Granderson owns 65 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, 18 quarterback hits, one pass defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for 7-7 New Orleans.

The Saints travel to the Los Angeles Rams for Thursday Night Football.

Tashaun Gipson, San Francisco 49ers

Gipson registered a strong game in the 49ers’ 45-29 win at Arizona. He made three tackles.

For the season, Gipson has carded 51 tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception, three passes defended and one quarterback hit for 11-3 San Francisco.

The 49ers host the Ravens in Week 16.

Mike Purcell, Denver Broncos

Purcell pieced together one of his better games this season in the Broncos’ 42-17 loss at Detroit. He boasted three tackles and one quarterback hit.

On the year, Purcell lays claim to 17 tackles, five quarterback hits, three passes defended and one fumble recovery for 7-7 Denver.

The Broncos host the Patriots in Week 16.

Marcus Epps, Las Vegas Raiders

Epps didn’t have to much in the Raiders’ 63-21 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. He made one tackle and had one pass defended.

For the season, Epps has logged 54 tackles, four tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and three passes defended for the 6-8 Raiders.

The Raiders travel to Kansas City in Week 16.

Chad Muma, Jacksonville Jaguars

Muma didn’t record a stat in the Jaguars’ 23-7 loss to Baltimore. For the season, Muma has registered 15 tackles for 8-5 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars travel to Tampa Bay in Week 16.

Bohl, never put any emphasis on having good Returners. I hope Sawvel can find a player with the speed to make a difference in the Return games.

Wyoming will face either UTEP or Norfolk State in the tournament finale on Thursday.

Wyoming heads into the contest with a 6-4 overall record after falling to Big Sky favorite Weber State on Saturday by a score of 84-71. The Cowboys head into the contest still leading the nation in three-point percentage at 42.9 percent. The Pokes are shooting 47 percent from the field this season.
