Bohl's Monday presser....

Frankly I was surprised to see that Bohl had a presser today, not always in the past has he had a presser on the Monday we are entering a bye week. I sat there and listened to Bohl's talk (like I have many, many times before), and I have come to the conclusion that the Pokes are as good as they are ever going to get under Bohl. As Bohl says, we have good talent, we don't have great talent. It is not fair to expect players to play above their abilities. These players are playing to their abilities and some are playing a little above and some are probably playing a little under. But under Bohl we will never be a champion in the MWC. The ONLY way we will ever be a MWC champion under Bohl is if, Boise State, Air Force, San Diego State, Fresno State, San Jose State, Utah State, Nevada, Hawaii, New Mexico and UNLV and especially CSU has an off year. We will be competitive, but there will always be something that will keep us from winning the conference under Bohl. Whether it be injuries or players not buying in, or experience, or a tough schedule (see 2023).

Wyoming Offensive Line Named to Moore List

Wyoming Offensive Line Named to Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll

Award Honors the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit in College Football

Laramie, Wyo. (Oct. 18, 2023) – The Joe Moore Award for the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit in College Football has revealed the members of its 2023 Midseason Honor Roll. The announcement was made in conjunction with The Foundation for Teamwork, which has presented the unique award since 2015.

Of the 133 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs competing in 2023, only 23 were named to the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll. Those 23 programs earning a spot on this year’s midseason honor roll are the offensive line units of Wyoming, Air Force, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, UCF and Washington.

The physical Wyoming offensive line has registered 146 knockdown blocks through seven games, – an average of 16 knockdowns per game. Despite injuries at the running back and quarterback position, Wyoming has been able to maintain an average of 5.3 yards per rush.

This year’s honor roll members represent eight conferences and two independents (in alphabetical order): ACC (5), BIG TEN (3), BIG-12 (3), MW (2), PAC-12 (3), SEC (6) and Notre Dame. For games played through Oct. 16, teams on this year’s honor roll had a combined record of 122-26 and includes sixteen ranked teams, eight of which are in the Top Ten of the AP Poll.

These units have gained the attention of the Joe Moore Award voting committee as it moves closer to announcing the selection of semifinalists on Nov. 14 and finalists on Dec. 5. Selection of the 2023 Joe Moore Award winner will be made public after a surprise visit to the winning university’s campus in late December.

“The offensive line units on the 2023 Midseason Honor Roll have caught the attention of the committee through the October 14 weekend, by demonstrating some or all of the award criteria in a recognizable way,” said Cole Cubelic, chairman of the Joe Moore Award voting committee. “The bar will raise significantly from here, and the consistency required to earn further recognition will be how the elite units eventually separate themselves.”

“It’s been fun to watch these units come together and begin to elevate their play as the year has progressed,” said Lance Zierlein, JMA voting committee member and NFL Draft analyst. “Our experience has shown that the cream begins to rise to the top from here on out, so we’ll keep a closer eye on all units to see how they finish down the stretch, especially in November. As always, having some depth and staying healthy will be critical.”

Units of Interest

In addition to the offensive line units listed above, committee members also took note of the play and production of Appalachian State, Boston College, Liberty, Louisiana, and Troy.

Honor Roll Criteria and Selection Process

The Joe Moore Award voting committee judges solely on six criteria: toughness, effort, teamwork, consistency, technique and finishing.

Evaluations for the midseason honor roll were made solely through weekly review of actual game film and offensive line coach-provided cut-ups.

Voting Committee

The Joe Moore Award voting committee comprises 10 individuals who are highly knowledgeable about offensive line play, including former linemen, coaches, talent evaluators and media analysts. This group conducts in-depth analysis by reviewing game tape every week of the season to assess both the fundamentals and subtleties of overall offensive line performance.

The 2023 voting committee includes Chairman Cole Cubelic (Auburn, SEC Network); Charles Arbuckle (UCLA, Indianapolis Colts); Randy Cross (UCLA, San Francisco 49ers); Gerry DiNardo (Notre Dame, head coach at LSU); Mike Golic, Jr. (Notre Dame, ESPN); Duke Manyweather (Humboldt State, player and coach); Geoff Schwartz (Oregon, Carolina Panthers); Phil Steele (publisher of Phil Steele’s College Football Preview, ESPN); Aaron Taylor (Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers); and Lance Zierlein (NFL draft analyst, NFL.com).

Past Award Recipients

Past recipients of the Joe Moore Award include the offensive lines of the University of Alabama (2015), the University of Iowa (2016). the University of Notre Dame (2017), the University of Oklahoma (2018), LSU (2019), the University of Alabama (2020 - first repeat winner), and the University of Michigan (2021 and 2022 - first back to back winner)

About the Joe Moore Award

The Joe Moore Award is named after Joe Moore, widely regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in college football history, most notably for his work at Notre Dame and the University of Pittsburgh. Over 18 seasons, Coach Moore sent 52 players on to the NFL, including Bill Fralic, Mark May, Russ Grimm, Jimbo Covert and others.

The Joe Moore Award trophy, crafted by legendary sports sculptor Jerry McKenna, is the largest trophy in college football, standing at a height of 6 feet and weighing in at 800 pounds. The perpetual trophy is made available for display by the winning university until the conclusion of the following college football season.

Pokes in the NFL (Week #6)

Pokes in the Pros: Week 6

LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/17/23) – Tyler Hall played in his first game of the National Football League season for Las Vegas in Week 5. After having DEV status for the first four weeks, the former University of Wyoming cornerback was elevated to the active roster and saw the field.

Hall produced – to the tune of four tackles – in a Las Vegas victory over Green Bay. He increased that production, registering six tackles, in a Raiders’ 21-17 win over New England on Sunday.

Suffice it to say, Las Vegas needs to play Hall more. It has resulted in wins.

Many other former Pokes helped their NFL franchises to victories Sunday. Below is a list of the former Wyoming student-athletes and how they performed in Week 6.

Logan Wilson, Cincinnati Bengals

Wilson recorded a busy day in the Bengals’ 17-13 victory over Seattle. He led the team with 11 tackles – a season high – to go alongside two tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hit.

Wilson has registered 46 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, one sack and one quarterback hit for 3-3 Cincinnati.

The Bengals are idle in Week 7.

Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Allen played relatively well in the Bills’ 14-9 win over the New York Giants. He was 19-for-30 for 169 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

For the season, Allen is 147-for-205 for 1,576 yards with 13 touchdowns and six picks. He also has 131 yards on 22 carries with three scores for 4-2 Buffalo.

The Bills travel to New England in Week 7.

Marcus Epps, Las Vegas Raiders

Epps logged a successful game in the Raiders’ 21-17 win over New England. He had two tackles.

Epps boasts 22 tackles and two tackles for losses for the 3-3 Raiders.

Las Vegas travels to Chicago for Week 7.

Andrew Wingard, Jacksonville Jaguars

Wingard had one tackle in the Jaguars’ 37-20 win over Indianapolis.

Wingard owns five tackles on the season for 4-2 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars travel to New Orleans for Thursday Night Football.

Chad Muma, Jacksonville Jaguars

Muma didn’t record a stat in the Jaguars’ 37-20 victory over Indianapolis.

Muma has 13 tackles for 4-2 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars travel to New Orleans for Thursday Night Football.

Carl Granderson, New Orleans Saints

Granderson enjoyed a fruitful day in the Saints’ 20-13 loss at Houston. He boasted six tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hit.

Granderson has recorded 23 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits and one forced fumble for 3-3 New Orleans.

The Saints host Jacksonville on Thursday Night Football.

Tashaun Gipson, San Francisco 49ers

Gipson logged a solid performance in the 49ers’ 19-17 loss at Cleveland. He had three tackles.

Gipson lays claim to 20 tackles and one interception for 5-1 San Francisco.

The 49ers travel to Minnesota for Monday Night Football.

Mike Purcell, Denver Broncos

Purcell registered a solid game in the Broncos’ 19-8 loss at Kansas City. He had a pair of tackles and one pass defended for the second consecutive week.

Purcell lays claim to seven tackles, three quarterback hits and two passes defended for 1-5 Denver.

The Broncos host Green Bay in Week 7.

-WYO-

5-2 is about right

In the light of day, I think we just have to be honest and say that while we missed a huge opportunity, the only reason we had that opportunity (to be ranked, etc.) was some really good fortune in previous games. The App state game was very flukish the way we pulled it out, the TT game was due to the difference in kicking games going in our favor (and maybe a little home cooking, opposite of last night) and the Fresno game could have gone either way at the end.

Credit to the Pokes for pulling out those first 3 but if we played those 4 games (TT, App, FSU, AFA) and 100 times I really think our average would come out to about .500.

I don’t know how we will finish, I would guess around 8-4 right now, but this is a solid team and I appreciate that we are 7 games in and have played several decent teams and have been competitive in every game.

Moving on...........

As much as that loss hurt, the season goes on. The next game wont be any easier as Boise will be coming off a loss and bye week as well. The next three games will be tough games. If Pokes want a chance at MWC title they are must wins!

Peasley has been productive outside of the App state game. At least in the firsrt half LOL. What I am most disappointed in so far is the Defense. They have not lived up to the billing! They have been decent to good but not GREAT! At this point of the seaason we are who we are. Hopefully getting Waylee back helps UW make a run!
GO POKES!!

ABGP........

The ABGP (Annual Bohl Gut Punch) is what I call this game. Bohl's teams year after year when they have that big game in the conference they choke, they screw-up, a coach screw-up, etc., but the bottom line is that the Wyoming fans have that shot to the gut 9 out of the 10 years Bohl has been in Laramie. Only one time in 10 years did they beat Boise St. and then they lost in the championship game. This is the hurdle that Bohl 99% of the time to fails getting over.....you would think in year 10 Bohl might have found some magic, but no, it will be just the annual excuses we will be getting. I have no doubt that Bohl is very happy not to have to give a press conference on Monday. But fear not, Bohl will get us into the Arizona Bowl, or the Potato Bowl or the New Mexico Bowl, and the University of Wyoming will advertise how he has gotten the Pokes to be bowl eligible again. The mention that we failed to win a MWC championship again, will never be mentioned. I wonder why I am a bit jaundice?? Maybe because I have seen this movie, over and over and over again over the last 10 year!
