There was a great story this week about all the facilities spending at UW over the past 10 years. Since 2014, UW has seen about $900 million in new facilities. Of that, about $200 million was spent on athletics facilities. And of that $200 million spent on athletics facilities, about $112 million came from state funding sources rather than private donors.
How can anyone be surprised that the new regime at the legislature has had enough?
Since 2014, how many football titles have we won? How many women’s basketball titles have we won? How many men’s basketball? Women’s volleyball?
And note this is only since 2014. This doesn’t include the Wildcatter, IPF, Rochelle, or the (botched) Arena renovations that have happened since the early 2000’s. When those are factored in, we have close to $300 million in new athletics facilities in the past 20ish years.
Since the turn of the century, the university has never been told ‘No’ on anything they’ve asked for. The $5 million annual match to CJC. The upgraded spending to support additional recruiting and nutrition needs. The list goes on and on. And yet the results have been the same.
I know it’s popular to call the new leadership in the legislature a bunch of cavemen who want Wyoming to fail. But what choice have they been given? If $300 million didn’t get us a winning program, why would $400 million do the trick?
Wyoming’s problem has never been money, regardless of how often Burman and his regime media over there want to gaslight people. The problem, is, was, and always will be strategic vision and execution. Until that changes, I wouldn’t send another dime of taxpayer dollars into this money pit.
