The P5 has 65 teams as does the G5 for the total of 130 FBS teams in 2021. The P5 has 55% of bowl eligible teams and the G5 45%.

Bowl Eligible teams for the P5: 46

Bowl eligible P5 teams with sub .500 conference records: 9

Percent of eligible P5 teams with losing conference records: 20%

Bowl Eligible teams for the G5: 37

Bowl eligible G5 teams with sub .500 conference records: 2

Percent of eligible G5 teams with losing conference records: 5%

The P5 has 71% of their teams eligible while the G5 has 57%. This along with the 7 additional P5 teams with sub .500 conference records points to the difference most G5 teams encounter in the OOC where P5 teams play more frequently at home and many G5 teams go on the road for money games.

The formula for access into the post season is to either win your OOC games or win your conference games. The P5 teams can generally stack their OOC to ensure 3-4 wins. When the G5’s win games over P5 teams it jeopardizes them from gaining eligibility.

I hope Coach Bohloney pays particular attention to how important it is to win conference games unless you pad your OOC schedule with a ton of cupcakes. 2022 is already looking at 3 tough OOC games and the MWC isn’t going to denigrate into the Miserable Wienie Conference handing out easy victories to teams named Wyoming in 2022.
