Mayfield is interesting because of his versatility. Remember when Kyle Shanahan was describing a future role for Jalen Hurd in which he’d be a quasi-receiver, tight end, “big slot,” H-back, etc.? Mayfield might be able to fill that role now. He’s also excellent on special teams as both a tackler and blocker and will likely appeal to coordinator Richard Hightower because of that. The 49ers will keep three tight ends on the roster. Nos. 2 and 3 need to be able to play special teams.
