Cowboys Round Out Recruiting Class with Morman and Turner

Pokes fill scholarship limit with latest signees

-Allen Edwards on Morman and Turner

LARAMIE, Wyo. (APRIL 25, 2019) – University of Wyoming head basketball coach Allen Edwards announced the signing of junior college big man Tyler Morman of Florida Southwestern College and Omaha native Javier (Zha-V-Air) Turner to the 2019-20 roster on Thursday afternoon.

“These two student-athletes fit a need for us in terms of their size and athletic ability,” Edwards said. “As we wrap up our signing class we have really built around some key pieces that we have coming back. We have a great young core group of players and completing the signing class with these two big men makes me excited to get back in the gym and get to work.”

Morman, a 6-9, 220-pounder from Mableton, Ga. helped lead Southwestern Florida to the Elite Eight of the Junior College National Tournament, as the Bucs were also the top-ranked team in junior college during the season. Morman was a Second Team All-Conference selection this season for the Bucs. He appeared in 33 games averaging 4.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in 12.6 minutes per night. He shot 56 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the three point line. An excellent defender, Morman averaged 0.8 blocks per game. He also appeared in 33 games as a freshman averaging 3.8 rebounds per game.

He is a graduate of Pebblebrook High School and ranked second in the State of Georgia in rebounding at 9.6 per game as a senior. He also ranked fourth in the state and led Cobb County at two blocks per game. He was named the Positive Athlete of the Year at Pebblebrook High School. He was also recruited by Radford, Western Michigan and Loyola Marymount.

“Tyler was a key member of the top-ranked junior college team in the country and brings an understanding of physicality,” Edwards said. “He can be a relentless rebounder that will be a great addition to our program.”

Turner, a 6-11, 230-pounder from Omaha, Neb. just finished his senior season at Omaha Northwest High School. He played in 13 games due to transfer rules, as Turner added 10.4 points per game to go along with 6.5 rebounds. He also added 1.7 assists per game. Turner also received recruiting interest from Western Illinois, Providence, Indiana State, Marshall, and Creighton.

“Javier has a tremendous upside,” Edwards said. “His body is very impressive for an incoming freshman. He is also very strong and has a chance to be a great player here for Pokes.”

The duo will join Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year Kenny Foster, junior college guard Greg Milton III and Denver guard Kwane Marble on the Pokes roster alongside eight returners, who saw significant playing time for the Pokes last season.
