Linder Announces Eight Signings to 2023-24 Roster

The Pokes still have two open scholarships

LARAMIE, Wyo. (May 2,2023) – University of Wyoming head men’s basketball coach Jeff Linder announced a portion of the Cowboy basketball recruiting class on Tuesday. The group of eight newcomers features five transfers and three freshmen. Wyoming has two scholarships remaining for next season.

The signing class features transfers from two NCAA-Division I programs, an All-American from Division II and an NAIA National Player of the Year. The freshman class features two players from Missouri and one from Florida.

“It has been a very productive two months and really liking where we are at right now with this group of signees alongside our returners that have been working hard in the weight room and on the court this offseason thus far,” UW head coach Jeff Linder said. “I’m excited about this class and for us to go out and sign and good mixture of transfer and freshmen.”

UW Spring Game Summary

Gold Team Wins Wyoming’s Spring Game 17-10 in Exciting Contest on Saturday

Gold Team of No. 1 Offense Edges Brown Team Featuring No. 1 Defense

SPRING GAME FINAL STATS: https://gowyo.com/documents/2023/4/29/2023_spring_game.pdf

Laramie, Wyo., (April 29, 2023) – The annual Brown and Gold Spring Game was an exciting one for the Wyoming Cowboy Football team on Saturday. Fans enjoyed 60-degree weather under sunny skies as they watched their Cowboys put on quite a show. In the end, the Gold Team prevailed with a 17-10 victory.

“I thought it was a really exceptional day. We were blessed to have really good weather. Our players have worked hard,” said head coach Craig Bohl. “Spring Games are never going to be perfect, but it’s an opportunity for our players to experience a game and go out and play. We think those things are important. Many times you try to replicate things in practice but when you get into a game it’s a little different.

.

“I was certainly encouraged by our play-making ability. Wyatt Wieland (graduate wide receiver) did some great things. I really think in the secondary we did some really good things there too. On the lines of scrimmage, we were thin today (due to injuries). We held some other guys out. We watched how many reps Treyton Welch (tight end) got. Harrison Waylee (running back) is going to have some surgery. We think it is going to be somewhat simple, but we held him out today.

“Overall, I was pleased with the effort. I think our tackling has improved from last fall. We made that a point of emphasis, and we ball hawked the ball fairly well today. Up until the tail end I thought we pass protected pretty well. It was a real good day for the Cowboys. Now our guys will transition to preparing for finals and summer workouts as we get ready for Texas Tech to start next season.”

There were strong performances by players on both sides of the ball Saturday. The Gold offense, led by returning starter Andrew Peasley at quarterback, generated 229 yards of total offense on 44 plays and averaged 5.2 yards per play. That included a balanced attack of 124 passing yards and 105 rushing. The Brown offense was quarterbacked by a combination of sophomore Evan Svoboda and junior Jayden Clemons. Svoboda threw for 50 yards for the Brown offense before he was inserted as the QB for the Gold offense for its final two possessions of the game. He threw for 24 yards for the Gold Team to total 74 passing yards on the day between the two teams. Clemons threw for 102 yards -- all for the Brown Team. The Brown offense accounted for 171 total yards -- 152 passing and 19 rushing.

Peasley was asked after the Spring Game what he thought the Cowboy offense could be next fall once they get all their players back healthy.

“I think its’ going to be something special,” replied Peasley. “The Spring Game is kind of weird because people are out (due to injury) and we’re not showing all our offense, but I thought we did well today. Our offense was productive. Obviously too many turnovers. I threw two picks and all the fumbles on the other side (Brown Team). That’s unacceptable and we have to keep improving on that.”

Peasley engineered two first-half scoring drives for the Gold Team -- one on a five-play, 42-yard touchdown drive to give Gold the lead at 7-0, with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter. Running back Jeremy Hollingsworth scored that first TD of the game on a two-yard run. Peasley also guided his team on a 10-play, 71-yard TD drive in the second quarter that was capped off by an eight-yard touchdown run by running back L.J. Richardson, with 6:58 left in the half to give Gold a 14-0 lead.

Richardson would be the leading rusher in the game, with six carries for 52 yards and one rushing TD. Hollingsworth carried eight times for 29 yards and scored one touchdown. Brown Team running back Sam Scott had 11 carries for 21 yards.

The top receiver in the game was sophomore wide receiver Isacc Sell from Laramie, Wyo. He caught eight passes for 79 yards for the Brown Team. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Charlie Coenen caught five passes for 33 yards also for the Brown Team. The Gold Team spread its completions over four main receivers. Graduate wide receiver Wieland had four receptions for 31 yards. Sophomore tight end John Michael Gyllenborg had two catches for 31 yards. Graduate tight end Welch caught two passes for 28, and redshirt freshman wideout Caleb Merritt had two catches for 17 yards.

Defensively, both defensive units were successful at forcing turnovers on the day. The No. 1 Brown defense intercepted three passes on the day. On the final play of the first half, cornerback Tyrecus Davis intercepted Peasley and returned the interception 42 yards for a Pick Six to pull Brown within a touchdown at 14-7, heading into halftime. Cornerback Kolbey Taylor picked off Peasley in the third quarter and safety Buck Coors intercepted Svoboda in the fourth quarter when Svoboda was quarterbacking the Gold Team.

The Gold defense’s specialty was forcing fumbles by the Brown offense. The Gold defense forced a total of four fumbles and recovered three of those, resulting in three forced turnovers. The three fumbles were forced by redshirt freshman defensive tackle Jaden Williams, redshirt freshman safety TJ Urban and sophomore linebacker Brent VanderVeen. The Brown defenders who recovered the fumbles were sophomore defensive end Keelan Cox and sophomore linebacker Nic Talich. Talich was credited with two of the three fumble recoveries.

For the Brown Team, defensive tackle Williams led all defenders in tackles (6), tackles for loss (4.0) and sacks (2.0) to go with his one forced fumble. Redshirt freshman nickel back Malique Singleton tied Williams for the most tackles (6) for Brown and also had a pass break-up. Redshirt freshman safety Koa McIntyre added five tackles for the Brown defense. Coors was the leading tackler for Gold with five tackles to go with his interception.

The only second half points for either team came off the foot of Wyoming’s All-America place-kicker John Hoyland. The junior was a perfect 2 for 2 in field goals for the day. He made a 27-yarder for the Gold Team with 6:00 left in the third quarter to give Gold a 17-7 lead, and he converted a 32-yard field goal for Brown with 36 seconds remaining in the third to make the final score Gold 17 and Brown 10. There was no scoring in the fourth quarter.

Gold Team punter Ralph Fawaz averaged 48.5 yards per punt on two punts, including a 56-yard boot. Brown Team punter Clayton Stewart averaged 46.7 yards on three punts, with his long punt going for 54 yards.

The first quarter saw the two defenses starting strong as the Gold defense recovered a fumbled snap by quarterback Svoboda at the Brown 25-yard line. But the Brown defense turned right around and held on a fourth down and one attempt by the Gold offense and Brown took over on downs at its own 16-yard line. Brown would take the ball out to the 42-yard line with the big play being a 15-yard pass completion from Svoboda to wide receiver Coenen. But on a fourth and two at the 42, Svoboda’s pass attempt fell incomplete under pressure from the Gold defense.

The first scoring drive of the game came on Gold’s ensuing possession. After a two-yard rush by running Richardson, quarterback Peasley completed three consecutive passes of seven yards to wide receiver Ryan Marquez, six yards to wideout Wieland and 25 yards to tight end Welch that took the ball down to the Brown two-yard line. Running back Hollingsworth carried the ball in untouched on the next play to give Gold a 7-0 lead with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter.

Revisiting 5 years ago, 2018 NFL draft.

1. Baker Mayfield- now on his 3rd team since the Browns drafted him #1. Bust.
2. Saquon Barkley- oft-injured but resurged last year enough to keep him from being a complete bust.
3. Sam Darnold- Saw ghosts and now on his 3rd or 4th team. Jets are partially to blame but he is a bust.
4. Denzell Ward- 2 time pro bowler. Good player.
5.Bradley Chubb- oft injured and now on the Dolphins. Impact player when healthy but is rarely healthy.
6. Quentin Nelson- 4 time pro bowler and on pace to be Hall of Fame guard.
7. Josh Allen- Best quarterback in the draft with the only competition being Lamar Jackson.
8. Roquan Smith- good player but disgruntled with Bears. Traded to Ravens.
9. Mike Mcglinchey- solid player picked up by the Broncos after being drafted by 49ers.
10. Josh Rosen- BUST on his 7th team.
This was a good draft but as the top ten indicates, there is no way of knowing how it will go. Injuries ruin careers. And busts just happen. I bet all the teams before Josh wish they would have drafted him, and yet it is hard to say if Josh would have had the success he has had with especially with the Jets, Broncos and Browns. Man, its a crap shoot!!

Head Coach Craig Bohl’s Philosophy on the Importance of Holding a Spring Game

Asked what he wants the public to see in Saturday’s Spring Game, Bohl said, “I think it’s important for our players to be able to play in front of our fans. Particularly for a younger player, even though it’s not a game, it gives them a sense of what a game is like. I think it is important for our coaches to be on the sidelines, to have officials, game clock, players in game uniforms.

“You’ll notice that our Spring Game is one of the latest in the country to try and cooperate with Mother Nature and have a decent game with weather. I encourage our fans to come out and take the opportunity to embrace this football team. They’re going to like this team. I personally like it, as well. You’ll see guys play with great energy and class. There will be some unsung hero, probably from the state of Wyoming, who everybody gets fired up about. That is how Big Horn (Will Pelissier) made his splash a couple years ago.

“Thursday’s practice will be in spiders and will be somewhat of a tune-up for the Spring Game. We think it’s still important to have a Spring Game. I know a lot of schools have departed from that and do a showcase, but we think it is still important for players to go out and get the feel of what a game is like and to showcase to our fans and the media our team.”

About the 2023 Wyoming Cowboy Football Team

Wyoming returns an impressive core of veterans from last season’s 7-6 team that finished second in the Mountain West Mountain Division, earned a bid to the Arizona Bowl and defeated rivals Air Force, Colorado State, Hawai’i and Utah State along the way.

Among the returning veterans are all four of Wyoming’s 2022 captains: linebacker Easton Gibbs, defensive tackle Cole Godbout, quarterback Andrew Peasley and tight end Treyton Welch. All four of those Cowboy captains have also earned All-Mountain West Conference honors during their careers.

Including the four team captains from last year, a total of 10 returning Cowboys received All-Conference recognition last season. Among the others are defensive tackle Jordan Bertagnole, offensive tackle Frank Crum, defensive end DeVonne Harris, place-kicker John Hoyland, punter Clayton Stewart and center Nofoafia Tulafono.

Hoyland was named Second Team All-American by Pro Football Focus (PFF) in addition to his All-Conference honors and was named one of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award that is presented to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker each season.

Cowboy defensive end Braden Siders is also returning after earning Honorable Mention Freshman All-America honors from College Football News (CFN) last year.

Exciting Seven-Game Home Schedule in 2023

The 2023 University of Wyoming Football season will kick off with a big home game on Saturday, Sept. 2 when the Wyoming Cowboys will host the Texas Tech Red Raiders from the Big 12 Conference in War Memorial Stadium. That game will be the first of seven home games for the Cowboys in 2023.

Of those seven home games, five will be played in the first six weeks of the season. In addition to hosting Texas Tech on Sept. 2, Wyoming will host: Portland State of the Big Sky Conference on Sept. 9, Appalachian State of the Sun Belt Conference (Sept. 23), New Mexico in UW’s Mountain West opener (Sept. 30) and Fresno State (Oct. 7). The only road game in the first six weeks of the season will be at Texas on Sept. 16 in Austin, Texas. The Cowboys other two home games in 2023 will be on Saturday, Nov. 4 vs. rival Colorado State and on Saturday, Nov. 18 vs. Hawai’i.

Keeping with its tradition of bringing exciting non-conference opponents to War Memorial Stadium, Wyoming’s 2023 season opener vs. Texas Tech will mark the most recent in a series of top-level non-conference opponents that Wyoming has hosted over the past 20 years, including: Kansas of the Big 12 (2003), Ole Miss of the SEC (2004), Virginia of the ACC (2007), Texas of the Big 12 (2009), Nebraska of the Big Ten (2011), Oregon of the Pac-12 (2017), Washington State of the Pac-12 (2018), Missouri of the SEC (2019) and now Texas Tech of the Big 12 (2023).

The Texas Tech Red Raiders will be the first Big 12 team to visit Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium since Texas in 2009. The only other time the Red Raiders have played in Wyoming’s War Memorial Stadium was 1991. The Cowboys won that game 22-17. Texas Tech is coming off a 2022 season that saw them post an 8-5 record and defeat Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl to end the 2022 season.

2022 Mountain West Conference Champion Fresno State will visit Laramie on Saturday, Oct. 7. Rival Colorado State will be visiting War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 4 for the 115th edition of the “Border War”. Appalachian State visits Wyoming on Sept. 23. The Mountaineers have pulled off some of the biggest upsets in college football in recent years. Last season, the Mountaineers went on the road and defeated Texas A&M of the SEC in College Station, Texas, by a score of 17-14 and App State nearly defeated North Carolina of the ACC in its 2022 season opener before losing a heartbreaker 63-61.

Bairstow and Shulga from Utah State both transfer to...

Just a few basketball thoughts. With the addition of Cam Manyawu I feel that Wyoming has a roster that they can go to war with this coming fall. I like the fact that Linder did bring in some experienced guards, but the freshmen better be ready to play because many of these guys are one and done. All of the guards appear to be scorers, and some of them have impressive 3 point range percentages. I am really curious about Walters, and seeing how he plays, I get the impression that he is going to give it his all as this will be a great chance to be seen on a bigger stage. I am hoping and expecting some that Manyawu will be able to come in and play some tough defense this year and maybe we will have a shot blocker again!

Bairstow and Shulga from Utah State both transfer to VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University), which is a school located in the downtown area of Richmond, Virginia. Shulga is from the Ukraine and Bairstow is from Australia, and it appears that they came along in package deal. I am somewhat surprised by their choice, they go from a suburban school in Utah to a metropolitan school on the east coast. I briefly looked at the other schools in the MWC tonight and looked at who they have recruited. DuSell from what I have been reading did himself no favors as his head coach is on shaky ground in Fresno. The Clifford kid from Colorado Springs who went to CU and now CSU is rated a 4 star recruit. I guess I am not as impressed as some others with this kid. I think that CSU got some solid players, but I like our roster better than theirs. I would rate Nigle Cook very much similar to the Clifford kid despite the star rating difference. I would argue that Cook played in a much more difficult league than Clifford. We all know though, you can throw everything out the window when it comes to Wyoming vs CSU. UNLV and New Mexico had their typical turnovers. Nevada lost Baker and a couple of other guys, so they lost a lot. Boise State looks like they reloaded pretty well. The forward from Air Force went to Clemson, that was a big blow to them. San Diego State was a little difficult to track down, they don't appear to be in with a lot of transfers, but are recruiting high school and they have a lot talent in that part of the country to choose from.

I am thinking that Rice will have Boise State back up there, San Diego State will be tough, Wyoming and CSU should be better. On the other end, Nevada I feel will have a hard time without Baker. SJSU and Fresno State, won't be pushovers, but they don't appear to have really loaded up. UNLV will probably be about the same, and Pitino at New Mexico will have the guys playing hard in the Pit, but we played well against them this last season, which was interesting. Air Force will be Air Force, they are hard to judge but they did lose a lot on a young team. Another competitive season in the MWC and Wyoming should be part of it!
