What is a Championship Team?

I have often heard the statement that in the "major Sports" Football and Men's and Women's BBall Burman has had zero MWC Championships. SO what is viewed as a championship?
  1. 1st at the end of the regular season? If that is the measure then UW has one Football championship when we hosted the MWC Championship in Josh Allen's Sophomore year.
  2. The winner of the MWC Championship game/tournament? If that is the measure then we have both a men's and a women's BBall championship,
  3. Win both the regular season and the MWC Championship game/tournament. If that is the measure then we have zero.

For what it's worth, GROK says we have one,
The exact number of Mountain West Conference (MWC) championships won by the Wyoming women's basketball team is not fully specified in the available information. However, it is confirmed that they won the MWC tournament championship in 2021, indicating at least one championship. The Mountain West Conference, established in 1999, recognizes both regular-season and tournament champions, but when people refer to "championships" in college basketball, they typically mean tournament titles, as these grant the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Without comprehensive data on all years since 1999, I cannot confirm additional tournament or regular-season titles Wyoming may have won.
For the most accurate and up-to-date total, including both tournament and regular-season championships, I recommend checking the official Mountain West Conference website (www.themw.com) or the University of Wyoming Athletics website (www.gowyo.com). As of the available information, the Wyoming women's basketball team has won at least 1 MWC championship.

Cowgirls / Falcons

Looks like the Cowgirls are just daring AF to shoot the jumpers, and they're making them. Time to tighten up the D.

Also, why are they allowing the AF coach to just stand with both feet inside the court the whole game? She was awful close to some of the action on our offensive end.

We need one of our girls to run into her and see if they call the technical foul.

Over the years…..

I’ve been pretty hard on BYU, Utah, Utah State, and the State of Utah in general.

This goes back to my days attending school at UW and living in SW Wyoming and putting up with the arrogance towards Wyoming usually portrayed by most things in Utah. I can’t say that I hated these schools, but strongly disliked them. I usually referred to Utah as “behind the Zion Curtain” and wasn’t very kind.

I had a bad health scare last week and if my wife hadn’t got me to Utah and under the care of some amazing doctors and nurses, I might not be here to cheer on my beloved Cowboys. The doctor that saved my life was a BYU graduate and a fine young man.

This doesn’t mean that my feelings for the about mentioned groups will be different, but I will definitely have more respect for them and my negativity towards them will not be so publically displayed.

My advise my fellow board members is that if you don’t feel good, get to the doctor and listen to your wife.

God bless you all.

Worst Football/Basketball combined seasons in history

AI has made my shitposting on these web sites so much easier. This is from xAI…

To determine the year with the fewest combined wins for the University of Wyoming football team and men’s basketball team over the last 50 years (1975–2024), we need to consider the seasonal records for both programs. The football team’s season typically spans from late summer to early winter (e.g., August to December), while the men’s basketball season runs from late fall to early spring (e.g., November to March), often crossing calendar years. For simplicity, I’ll align the “year” with the football season’s calendar year and pair it with the basketball season that starts in that same year (e.g., 1975 football with the 1975–76 basketball season). This is a common approach for such analyses, though data limitations may require some estimation.

The University of Wyoming football team has competed in NCAA Division I (FBS or its predecessors) and has been part of conferences like the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) until 1998 and the Mountain West Conference (MWC) since 1999. The men’s basketball team, also Division I, has similarly competed in the WAC and MWC, with notable success in the distant past (e.g., 1943 NCAA Championship) but more modest results in recent decades. Over the last 50 years, both teams have experienced fluctuating performance, with football occasionally achieving winning seasons (e.g., under coaches like Joe Tiller or Craig Bohl) and basketball having sporadic strong years (e.g., under coaches like Jim Brandenburg or Steve McClain).

Exact win totals for every year require comprehensive historical records, which are not fully provided here. However, I can estimate based on general trends and key data points from available sources. Football typically plays 11–13 games per season (including bowls), while basketball plays 25–35 games (including postseason). A poor year for football might yield 2–4 wins, and a poor basketball season might yield 5–10 wins, suggesting a low combined total could dip below 10.

Let’s consider some plausible low points:
- **1975**: Football struggled in the mid-1970s under Fred Akers, finishing 2–9 in 1975. Basketball, under George Radovich, went 10–17 in 1975–76. Combined: 2 + 10 = 12 wins.
- **1986**: Football, under Dennis Erickson, went 6–6, but earlier in the decade (e.g., 1985: 3–8) was weaker. Basketball in 1985–86 under Jim Brandenburg went 15–14, but 1986–87 dropped to 14–16. For 1986: 6 + 14 = 20 wins (not the lowest).
- **1999**: Football, transitioning to the MWC under Dana Dimel, went 2–9. Basketball, under Steve McClain, went 14–14 in 1999–2000. Combined: 2 + 14 = 16 wins.
- **2007**: Football, under Joe Glenn, went 5–7. Basketball, under Heath Schroyer, had a dismal 7–21 season in 2007–08. Combined: 5 + 7 = 12 wins.
- **2010**: Football, under Dave Christensen, went 3–9. Basketball, under Heath Schroyer, went 10–21 in 2010–11. Combined: 3 + 10 = 13 wins.
- **2020**: Football, impacted by COVID-19, played a shortened season under Craig Bohl, finishing 2–4. Basketball, under Jeff Linder, went 14–11 in 2020–21. Combined: 2 + 14 = 16 wins.

The absolute lowest combined total likely occurs in a year when both teams hit rock bottom. The 1975 season stands out: football’s 2–9 record reflects a nadir before Akers’ departure, and basketball’s 10–17 was among the program’s weaker showings in that era. A combined total of 12 wins is exceptionally low, as even in down years, one team often offsets the other slightly. For comparison, 2007’s 12 wins (5 + 7) ties it, but basketball’s 7–21 in 2007–08 is one of the worst in recent memory, and football’s 5–7 was subpar but not catastrophic.

Without exhaustive records, 1975 and 2007 emerge as candidates for the fewest combined wins, both at 12. Given 1975’s consistently poor performance across both sports and the lack of evidence for a lower total elsewhere, it’s a reasonable conclusion. Cross-checking with historical context (e.g., Wyoming’s football struggles pre-1980s resurgence and basketball’s lean years post-Shelton), 1975 aligns with a period of minimal success.

Thus, the year with the fewest combined wins in the last 50 years is likely **1975**, with approximately 12 wins (football: 2, basketball: 10).

Cowgirls

Watched the whole game last night and I was for the most part impressed. Haven’t seen them play for a couple years live. Vegas played a zone most of the night and it was amazing how they passed and shared the ball all game. Entry passes to the low post where nice. Brought a girl up to the middle of the free throw line she passed to the open girl they whipped it around until they found the open shooter. They didn’t dribble the air out of the goddam ball like our men do.

ACC Settlement - Possible model for a revamped MWC/PAC ??

I was a bit surprised to see Clemson and Florida State Settle to keep the ACC intact for the next 5-6 yrs. Interesting revenue share with nothing fixed! Revenue distribution will be as follows as per ESPN:

"The new revenue distribution model, or "brand initiative," will be based on a five-year rolling average. Sixty percent of total ACC television revenue will go toward this initiative. More weight will be given to more recent viewership. A team's total viewership will then be divided by the total ACC viewership to equal its percentage of the money available in this pool. The other 40 percent of the television revenue will be distributed evenly among all league schools.

If BSU, WSU and OSU and SDSU feel like they carry the rest of us laggards then this model gives them the lions share of the revenue. I have always thought Wyoming punches above weight class in terms of TV eyeballs. Yes WY is the smallest TV market in the country but I bet we actually outdraw many of the MWC schools.

As per Grok: "Wyoming football’s television ratings in 2024 were solid for a mid-tier MWC team, with standout moments like the Arizona State (1.1M) placing them above the conference’s bottom tier. However, they lagged significantly behind Boise State, UNLV, Colorado State, and Air Force, whose marquee games or larger markets drove higher averages. Wyoming’s viewership aligns with Fresno State and San Jose State, reflecting a competitive but not elite draw in the MWC television landscape. For exact 2024 averages, full Nielsen data post-season would be needed, but Wyoming’s middle-of-the-pack status is clear."

So we are at the bottom in terms of instate eyeballs, but end up in the middle of the pack. Which means we would be treated more than fair under such a model. With the relative strong state support (compared to CSU) I think economically we would be more than competitive. I suspect our numbers would be even stronger if we could actually compete for conference titles.

I hope this model catches on as a way to keep smaller teams/markets viable and reward those programs with significantly greater "interest" levels. Thoughts?
