Following a 111-80 Win Over San Jose State

In the Opening Round of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Basketball Championship

BOX SCORE:

TEAM NOTES

•Wyoming’s 111 points were the third most points ever scored in a Mountain West Tournament game. The only two teams to score more were UNLV and New Mexico. The Rebels scored 120 and the Lobos scored 117 on March 7, 2002, in the same game – a 120-117 UNLV victory.

•The Cowboys 31-point margin of victory ties for the second largest margin of victory in a MW Tournament game. San Diego State defeated Utah State by 34 points (73-39) on March 13, 2014. Air Force defeated San Jose State by 31 points (87-56) on March 13, 2019.

•The last time Wyoming scored 100 points in a game was Feb. 20, 2018, when the Cowboys lost at home to New Mexico by a score of 114-119.

•The last time Wyoming won a game scoring 100 points was on Jan. 24, 2018, when UW defeated No. 23 ranked Nevada 104-103 in double overtime in Laramie.

•Wyoming met San Jose State for the 20th time on Saturday. The Cowboys now lead the overall series 18-2.

•Today’s meeting between the Cowboys and Spartans was only the second time the two played each other in a Mountain West Tournament game. The first meeting was a 74-61 Cowboy win on March 7, 2018. Wyoming now leads the series 2-0 in MW Tournament meetings.

•Wyoming’s record this season now stands at 14-10 overall. The Pokes were 7-9 in regular-season conference play this season.

•San Jose State was the only Mountain West opponent that Wyoming did not play during the regular season this year.

•Wyoming’s 59 first-half points vs. San Jose State tied for the most the Cowboys had scored in a half this season. UW also scored 59 in the second half against Nevada on Jan. 24 in a 93-88 home win. It marked the fifth 50-point half of the season for the Pokes.

•UW’s 59 first-half points set a new Mountain West Conference Tournament record for points scored in a first half.

•The 59 points in the first half were the most Wyoming had scored in a first half since scoring 59 against UCCS on Dec. 5, 2005.

•Offense was the story in the first half as the Cowboys shot an amazing 64.7 percent (22 of 34) from the field in the first half, 42.9 percent (6 of 14) from three and 81.8 percent (9 of 11) from the free-throw line.

•The 64.7 percent from the field in the first half was the highest in an opening half since shooting 65.2 percent against Akron in 2007

•Wyoming has shot its best percentages in the first half in the last two games after shooting 57 percent against UNLV in the regular season finale

•The Cowboys shot a season-high 59.7 percent in Wednesday’s win over San Jose State. That is the second consecutive game UW shot a season high. The Pokes shot 55 percent from the field in the regular-season finale against UNLV.

•Wyoming controlled the game from start to finish, leading in the game for 37 minutes and 30 seconds of the 40-minute game.

•The Cowboys scored 52 of their 111 points in the paint on Wednesday.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

•Freshman Graham Ike scored a career high 32 points on the day for his sixth game in double figures in the 11 games he has played this season. Ike scored 21 of his points in the first half.

•Ike’s 32 points were the most points by a Cowboy freshman in the Mountain West era of Cowboy basketball.

•Ike’s 32 points were also the most points scored by any freshman in a Mountain West Tournament game.

•Ike set a new personal scoring high for himself by halftime of Wednesday’s game, with 21 first-half points. Ike’s previous career high was 18 points vs. Nevada on Jan. 24, 2021.

•It was Ike’s first 20-point scoring game of his career, and the first 30-point game of his career. The last Cowboy to score 30 points was Hunter Maldonado, who scored 30 points earlier this season on Dec. 12, 2020, at Utah Valley.

•Ike became the third Cowboy this season to score 30 points. In addition to Ike and Maldonado, UW freshman Marcus Williams scored 30 points vs. Denver on Dec. 9.

•Ike scored in double-figures in the first half for the second consecutive game. He scored 13 points in the first half against UNLV in the regular-season finale.

•The 21 points in the first half by Ike tied Hayden Dalton (Cornell – Dec. 17, 2016) for the most points in a first half by a Cowboy in the MW era of Cowboy Basketball.
