We, my family and I, are Wyoming proud to the max. after a great four days in San Diego. Residents of San Diego definitely know the Wyoming Cowboys came to town after seeing proud Brown and Gold wearing fans, everywhere, for four days. Our Uber driver on the way to the airport on Thursday morning asked us if the whole state of Wyoming came to San Diego! LOL He said he saw Brown and Gold everywhere and so did everyone else. It was so neat. A brief recap follows:
We arrived at the team hotel, the Downtown Marriott, at 11 am Monday morning and already a good number of fans were there. It is a beautiful hotel in a gorgeous tropical setting with outdoor bars, meandering pools, beautiful landscaping, etc. Good job in picking the centrally located Marriott UW! The festivities started that evening at 6 p.m. at an amphitheatre located downtown within easy walking distance of the hotel. It was a battle of the bands attended by many UW and BYU fans and many citizens of San Diego. Our Western Thunder band, cheerleaders, and Pistol Pete represented Wyoming and UW extremely well! Our band and cheerleaders deserve a great deal of thanks and congratulations, folks! They represented well at five events I attended this week, including the game. They worked their butts off and did a GREAT job all week!
In an effort to keep this post as short as I can I'll stick to only the main events but Cowboy fans were everywhere throughout the week and many good times were enjoyed. The next big event, and a highlight of my trip, was the team luncheon on Tuesday in the hangar aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Midway. In my opinion it was super. The keynote speaker, a former Univ. of Wisconsin and San Diego Chargers player, gave an outstanding speech with a great message for the athletes, and all in attendance. The coaches gave very good speeches, the Bowl Sponsors gave good talks, a Navy Admiral gave a very good presentation on the U.S. Navy and the preeminence of San Diego for the Navy, etc. It was a very good event as were all of them throughout the week. Major kudos to the bowl sponsors; they put on a first class event. We went to the Fiesta Bowl last year and this bowl was on par, at a minimum, in every way. Our great Western Thunder Band, cheerleaders, and Pistol Pete participated in a band face-off with BYU on the carrier before the event and participated during the event, playing our fight song, etc. Man, was I proud of those folks at every event!
The next major event was on Tuesday evening at a very nice restaurant along the waterfront, again within walking distance of the team hotel, sponsored by the UW Alumni organization and they did a GREAT job! Over 600 UW Alumni and friends enjoyed very good food, drinks of their choice, great entertainment from the UW band and cheerleaders, and short but very good addresses by UW President Nichols, Wyoming's governor Matt Mead, and our athletic director Tom Burman. What a great time with fellow Cowboy supporters.
On Wednesday morning the team hotel lobby and surrounding areas were packed and buzzing with Wyoming fans, as were the trains to the stadium shortly after as we all headed for the stadium and the Cowboy Joe Tailgate and game. The 3 hour tailgate had very good food and l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-g beer lines as nearly 2000 Cowboy fans rubbed shoulders and enjoyed the great atmosphere.
The game has been discussed a lot on other threads so I'll not comment there except to say I'm super proud of our Cowboys as was every fan I saw leaving the stadium, every fan I saw and spoke with on the packed train heading back downtown, and every fan I spoke with that night and the next morning before heading to the airport. Fans of the Wyoming Cowboys represented very well in San Diego this week, as did our great Wyoming Cowboy Football Team! Times are good Cowboy fans and I thought some would be interested in how things went during UW's Bowl Week.
