As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

If having a Smith in the shotgun taking snaps seems to be working for the Wyoming Cowboys, why change things up? In that spirit, the Wyoming football team has offered a Cade Smith, the brother of current Wyoming quarterback, Brett.

The younger Smith stands 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds. Last season he led his West Salem (Ore.) squad to an 8-1 mark and a conference title. He said West Salem made the state quarterfinals before being knocked out by the eventual state runners-up. Along the way he completed 112-of-162 passes for 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran for another 380.

"I'm pretty similar," Smith said when asked to compare his skill set to Brett. "I think the difference is I am bigger and he more agile. I think I can run just as well as he can and I use that to my advantage."

Smith runs a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and his time of 11.6 in the 100 meters qualified him for the All-City meet this year.

After being named Honorable Mention All-Conference as a sophomore last year, Smith said his recruitment hasn't really started. He said a recruiting service sent out his highlight film and the Wyoming coaches liked what they saw. Because college football coaches cannot contact players until the start of their Junior year, the Wyoming coaches had to send an email to Smith's high school coach, who forwarded the scholarship offer to Smith's father.

Due to the fact he plays football on Friday nights, Smith said he hasn't spent much time in Laramie, though he did see a spring practice at Wyoming this year. He was impressed with what he saw.

"The weather was awesome," Smith said. "I know I see people talking about it being 30 below or whatever, but that day the weather was great. I love the facilities. It was a beautiful campus. I am an outdoorsman like Brett and I really liked the open feel of the campus. I thought that was awesome."

Cade Smith said Brett Smith has also been open with him about his experience in Laramie and that has reflected positively on Cade.

"He told me about his relationships with the coaches and how great that is and how much about football he has learned," said Cade Smith. "He told me what I could expect if I went to Laramie."

The younger Smith said he isn't likely to name any favorites or commit to any schools early, instead, preferring to let the process play out. He added that he is doing his part to make himself more attractive to college coaches by giving them the opportunity to get him into spring practice early as a freshman.

"I have given more thought to how we are going to do this season," Smith said. "I do want to see what schools are interested as the process goes on. I do plan to graduate early and I am on track to do that. Brett told me how big of a help that was for him."
