Sounds like the Pokes played great, the defense turned the corner and the offense finally clicked. Good to know we finally have a notch in the win column. Wouldn't have thought 14 points would be enough to get the job done in Pullman, but with how happy everyone is it must have worked. Powder River!
Just kidding. Don't have a cow, man. Some thoughts from the game Saturday night and looking ahead to Saturday:
- This Saturday's UNM game is the most important since Bohl took over, and by any account is a game that SHOULD be won. Win and talk will start that the ship has been righted and that anything is possible in an historically piss poor year for the conference (I know this talk will start because I will start it). Lose to a lousy New Mexico team at home and the last dozen casual fans still somewhat interested will write off the season completely and there won't be more than 10,000 actual butts in seats for the rest of the year. Too harsh? Maybe. But the truth is like rain. It doesn't give a damn who or what it falls on.
- Brian Hill has established himself as the Alpha dog in the backfield and is probably the best back in the conference. Don't know what has happened with Wick but he seems unsure and is dancing in the hole too much. Hill gets the ball and goes like hell. I think it's realistic to think Hill could completely re-write the record book when it comes to Cowboy running backs.
- QB isn't the problem. To me, Coffman looks better in the pocket than Brett ever did. He's a better passer and is infinitely better when it comes to the deep ball. Brett had the intangibles but for this offense I would actually pick Coffman.
- The change of scenery looked like it helped the Pokes, at least until reality set in during the second half.
- It continues to bother me that our staff loses the adjustment battle at halftime more often than not. We saw it happen in the North Dakota game as well as on Saturday. The offense and running game that looked unstoppable in the first half generally disappeared in the second. I'm not enough of a football guy to know WHY it is happening but it seems evident that it is. My guess is that it has to do with our relative lack of experience with the assistants. Either way, I don't know when we've seen a Bohl coached team come out and "win" the second half. And the reality is that we've now lost 6 straight and 10 of the last 11.
