Cowboy Football Enters Third Week of Spring Camp

Pokes Hosted Youth Clinic This Past Saturday

LARAMIE, Wyo. (APRIL 8, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboys opened the third week of spring practice on Tuesday inside War Memorial Stadium. It marked the seventh practice of the spring, as Wyoming is nearing the halfway point of the spring.

Wyoming will have open practice again this week with the start set for 11 a.m. on Saturday.

What Head Coach Jay Sawvel Had to Say

It was good to get outside today and play in some wind and cooler weather. We got live work in, and we have progress to make. Our guys are working on work before the ball is snapped, working on the assignment and the alignment, and knowing where your eyes go. But overall, it was good work today, but we need to have a really good day on Thursday and get ready to scrimmage on Saturday.

Sawvel Announces Addition to Coaching Staff

Head football coach Jay Sawvel announced the addition of running back coach Gary Harrell to the Cowboy coaching staff on Tuesday. Harrell comes to Wyoming after serving as the running back coach at Colorado since the 2023 season.

Affectionately known as "The Flea," Harrell is a native of Miami, Fla., and played collegiately at Howard University where he is a member of the School’s Hall of Fame. He spent two seasons in the NFL and spent time in the World league and the Canadian Football League. He also served as head coach at his alma mater.

“I’m very excited for this next step and excited to be amongst this staff,” Harrell said. “I have heard great things about the atmosphere here at the University of Wyoming and excited for this opportunity to bring my energy and work with this great group of young men.”

He was named running back coach at Colorado in December of 2022. He helped lead the Buffs to the 2024 Alamo Bowl. Prior to his time in Boulder, Harrell coach at Jackson State joining the program in November of 2020, after serving as running backs coach for a season at Alabama State.

Veterans in the Middle of the Defense for the Pokes

The Cowboy defense features a veteran group of players this season. Senior nose tackle Ben Florentine and senior defensive tackle Caleb Robinson are leading the way and have appeared in a combined 62 games . Florentine recorded a career-high 25 tackles last season. Robinson has added 43 in his career.

Sophomores Dante Drake and Lucas Samsula and graduate transfer Aneesh Vyas are also getting a lot of reps while potential starter Jayden Williams sits out this spring to recover from foot surgery.

"Now we have young guys who have been tested, and they know what it's like in a game," said Robinson, who missed the 2024 season due to injury. "We shouldn't be having those pre-game jitters and guys shouldn't be out here making the same mistakes they have been making in the past.
