Laramie, Wyo. (July 16, 2020) – Incoming junior forward Drew LaMont has taken advantage of having a family member in the coaching ranks over the past few seasons, as the Florida native trained with his older brother Drake, a current graduate assistant at Texas Tech and former forward at Western Michigan.

"My brother has been my trainer over the past couple years," LaMont said. "We just would wake up every morning and get after it really fine tuning my game."

Drake, the elder of the two LaMont children got his start following an outstanding career at Western Michigan as a player development intern with the Dallas Mavericks. He would pass on what he learned in the NBA to Drew during his training. Although his brother was a back to the basket type of player, Drake work on shooting with Drew and his stats from last season proved the duo work well, as LaMont shot 41 percent from behind the arc last season in junior college.

"My brother used quite a bit of the drills he learned with the Mavericks in my workouts," LaMont said. "He worked with the shooting coach in Dallas and as he continued to learn more of the game he really relayed it on to me."

Lamont is a native of Plantation, Fla. and will have two seasons of eligibility with the Pokes. He spent last season playing at Indian River State College for head coach Charlie Wilson, as that program is one of the top junior college programs in the nation. He earned first Team All-Southern Conference, as he recorded 12.8 points per game to rank second on the team. He made 84 shots from behind the arc and ranked third on the team grabbing 4.1 rebounds per game.

Prior to his time at Indian River State College, LaMont spent one season at American University. He recorded 3.5 points per game as a true freshman. He played 17.5 minutes per game and started three contests. He shot 36 percent from behind the arc and added 1.7 rebounds per game.

"I think playing at junior college really humbled me," LaMont said. "Going to a junior college helped me learn how hard you have to work. My time there also worked on my perimeter game, as I was allowed to handle the basketball quite a bit more."

His play last season at Indian River State College helped get the attention of the Cowboy staff and LaMont signed on to play for the Cowboys.

"I love the coaching staff we have here at Wyoming and I really connected with them," LaMont said. "One thing during recruiting process that was big for me was I wanted to go to a program where the coaches care. We have conversations every day and they don't have to relate to basketball and we formed a great relationship."

The Sunshine State native looks to join a long list of great Cowboys from Florida. The former 1,000 point scorer in high school feels he has the tools to fit into the Wyoming system.

"I feel like I have been groomed to coach Linder's style of play," LaMont said. "It is very much a read and react system and I was a part of that the last couple of seasons."
