As noted in RedButtePoke’s thread, it looks like we have gained a commit from Terrin Dickey, 6’7” 190 lb forward out of Albuquerque. He was a 2020 gra that was going to do a prep year at Core4 in Atlanta but doesn’t appear to have actually ended up there (guessing that team didn’t materialize due to COVID).
Very interesting on a number of levels:
1. Dickey will apparently be joining the Pokes immediately. I don’t expect him to actually play but I can see the thinking here. No real downside as it gives him development time with the staff and does not use up a year of eligibility due to the rules during this COVID year. In addition, with Lamont’s departure, it isn’t a bad thing to add another body as we were down to only 10 eligible players and this is not a good year to have low numbers as you could lose 3-4 guys due to contact tracing with basically no warning.
2. Let’s just throw this out there, he was definitely an under the radar recruit. As far as I can tell he did not have any D-1 offers and was going to attend a prep school to try to expand his recruitment. Kind of brings back bad memories of AE’s recruiting to be honest.
3. Positional Fit - it Is clear that this is roughly the type of player that Linder has been targeting. The other recent offers (Teafale Lenard and Anouar Mellouk) were in a similar mold. All are about 6’7“ 180 3/4 types. It makes you wonder if Lamont‘s departure wasn’t as unexpected as we may have thought as it appears they were looking for someone to fill that role on the roster.
From what I have seen Dickey is someone that has played more as a 4/5 but is developing perimeter skills. A familiar situation for a tall kid playing against relatively weak high school competition. New Mexico HS hoops is slightly better than Wyoming, but not dramatically so.
I say all this with the assumption that he is going to be a scholarship player.
