If Alex Gardner were a car, his sales pitch would leave you asking for the undercoating and extended warranty. To hear the 5-foot-9, 184-pound running back from Jacksonville (Fla.) say it, he is the entire package.
"I am elusive. I can make anyone miss in the open field. I can take it the distance, I can take it 60-plus (yards). I have great balance and terrific vision," Gardner said when asked his strengths.
His stats seem to back up his claims. Last season Gardner rushed for 1,006 yards and caught another 247 yards worth of passes. Those numbers have led to scholarship offers from Wyoming, Western Michigan, Troy, Old Dominion, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, and North Dakota State.
This weekend, Gardner will be in Laramie, Wyo. to get a look at the Wyoming program under new head coach Craig Bohl.
"I am hoping to see how it is with the other coaches and the players," Gardner said. "My recruiting coach is AJ Cooper and he said he loves it there. He said it is a great place. He said the facilities are great and he really likes the conference they are in too."
Gardner has previously visited Wake Forest, North Carolina, Duke, Tennessee, and Western Michigan. He will visit Florida Atlantic and Florida International next weekend. Gardner professes to have no favorites and said he will take all of his visits before making a decision.
"I will not be committing on this visit," he said. "I will take all my visits and then make a decision next week or just wait until Signing Day."
While he said he does harbor some concern about a potential move from Jacksonville to Laramie, he said he is willing to make the move if the atmosphere feels right.
"I want to check out the atmosphere and get a sense for how the fans are there," Gardner said. "I want to find out how I fit in with the team, the campus and the town as well."
