I am posting this now off a 31 point victory because I am almost positive the Pokes lose by 15 to the Aztecs. So I am writing this now while I feel very positive about the future of the program without the lingering effects of getting beaten by a superior team. Sure the Pokes could pull off the upset so maybe writing this will help jinx the Asstecs.
For the first time in quite a while, I feel great about Cowboy basketball. We have 4 freshman that will be stars, in my opinion. The obvious are Ike, Williams and Dusell but I also think that if Oden sticks around he will be the benefactor of many a lob dunk from Williams. He adds some muscle and more feel for the game and I think he will be a solid player.
This program looks poised to have a breakout year, next season. The freshmen will no longer be new and we will also have the senior leadership of a great utility type player in Maldonado. We no longer have to bitch about how horrible our bigs are. Ike has all conference first team potential, if not MVP of the league potential and a healthy Nelson as a backup banger. Gone are the days of stiff post players that couldnt catch the ball if you put stickem on their hands.
Our shooters are actually shooters with some versatility. Dusell, Foster, and Jeffiries are all guys that do multiple things including defend. Our slashers, Maldo and Marble are very capable of going for 20 plus and against slower, less long teams, they will slash to the rim and score at will and of course you add the freshman of the year Marcus Williams to the mix and it gets even more impressive. I actually think this team will be better if Williams leads the team in assists and steals but not scoring. Just like Ike, he has potential to be an MVP, granted he would need to lead the team in scoring to pull that off.
I give Linder an A for his efforts this year. The only complaint is the team is inconsistent especially on the defensive end, BUT that might be as much of a product of the pandemic and not being able to really practice as any thing. Great season and looking forward to a big 2021-22 hoops year.
