With the dead period for recruiting coming to an end this week the Wyoming football program will be hosting a number of recruits on official visits. Among them is D’Angelo Gunter, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound corner from San Diego’s Den Norte High School.
By the sounds of things it seems the battle for his services will be a replay of the Poinsettia Bowl as BYU and Wyoming are the two schools he will visit before making a decision. He also holds scholarship offers from Hawaii, Weber State, and Southern Utah. Last season Gunter was named All-League after breaking up nine passes and accounting for 55 stops.
“Coaches like my length and speed,” Gunter said. “All the receivers in college now are big and fast and coaches need someone who can be just as tall and just as fast.”
Gunter is familiar with Wyoming having spoken with the Cowboys for some time. He also managed to see the program when it came to San Diego and the Poinsettia Bowl, as he stopped down to watch a Wyoming practice.
“It was good,” Gunter said of the practice. “It was high-tempo, well-organized and they got things done quickly.”
This weekend Gunter, who claims a 4.53 time in the 40-yard dash, said he hopes to see what it is like to be a Wyoming football player during the school year, as well as just get to know more about the program. He said Wyoming has recruited him because it is looking for taller corners and the fact both of its starting corners next season will be seniors.
“I am interested in meeting the players, the coaches and to see what the area is like,” Gunter said. “I followed Wyoming when they came down here for the Poinsettia Bowl, but I want to know what a typical day is for them at school and get a feel for the school.”
Gunter has visited BYU previously and said he is not a member of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church, but is interested in the program. He adds that he doesn’t believe he will take any more visits other than Provo and Laramie before deciding, based on his gut, before Signing Day.
“Mostly I am looking to schools to find out just do they have what I need for education,” Gunter said. “Do they have a great business and communications program? That is what I am interested in studying. Wyoming has a great business program. Are they successful on the field? Are they a family-like atmosphere and do you get the feeling like everyone there has your back?”
