Tampa product Chavez Pownell visited Wyoming two weekends ago and after completing his visits, picked Wyoming Tuesday on the eve of national signing day set for Wednesday. He favored Wyoming over Southern Illinois, Youngtown State, and Illinois State after over a week of consideration.
Pownell, a defensive back from Jefferson High School in Tampa, is the fourth Florida product to verbal the Cowboys for the 2014 class.
Pownell is a 5-foot-10, 192-pound defensive back/wide receiver from Jefferson High School in Tampa. He said he accounted for around 1,100 all-purpose yards a year ago, as well as five interceptions on defense and eight total touchdowns.
"It's a blessing to play football at the next level," said Pownell. "I give God all the glory. I'm so blessed."
The 2014 prospect talked to GoWyoGo.com two weeks ago before his visit to Wyoming and appeared open minded and eager to try a new environment different from Florida, where he certainly will get the change he was anticipating coming to the high plains in the Rockies.
"I am going to be spending a lot of time in school, so I want to see what the school is like, get inside the classrooms," said Pownell before his Laramie visit. "I also want to see the weight room and the facilities. I also want to see how the coaches and the other players are to be around."
New UW head coach Craig Bohl believes the program needs to be built immediately with defensive linemen, quarterback, and solid defensive backs, and Pownell looks to fit an ideal defensive back prospect.
Cowboy assistant A.J. Cooper has worked the state of Florida and was the main recruiter for Pownell since Cooper was at NDSU and Pownell will be joined by fellow Floridians in quarterback Nick Smith, defensive back C.J. Jennings, and athlete Robert Priester.
