So I’m liking Linder’s recruits—they have some size and shooting ability. Hopefully it translates to the D-1 level. Would like to see the Pokes pick up a traditional assist kind of player at some point. Attached is an interesting read about the importance of hitting the corner 3 and having a player that can find the shooter. It’s heavy on metrics, but gets into some interesting things. It’s been awhile since Wyoming had a guy that on some nights could rack up 7-10 assists a game or was the guy who found the open player. Brandon Ewing comes to mind. Perhaps the philosophy is that assists are doled out among the three other guys on the arc and there’s no need for a penetrate-and-dish player.
Linder’s UNC team averaged 13.4 assists per game last year, not many more than the Pokes 11.3 a game. But Jonah Radebaugh was a 6.5 assist per game guy (five games in double digit assists) and that helped UNC to a #6 ranking in 3-pt. FG percentage nationally. Hopefully Linder is after a similar player or can make one from the current roster and signees.
