It is close to national signing day and the football thoughts are starting to kick in!
Lets start with all those young men coming back ( Rfr, Freshman and sophomores) and also a couple not as young, but with new positions. Makes the horror of 2015 a bit more swallowable! We certainly should not forget the contributions that Gentry and Mulhardt will make, but freshman James Douglas got some significant time and a TD vs. UNLV.
You could start with the QB position. Not a lot of field time, but he had good pub coming in and for the brief moments that we saw him in the early season the contributions of Josh Allen cannot be understated. I certainly liked what he brings and you wonder what the season may have been, but with Coffman present last season, his play time would have been interesting if he had not been injured. Our QB position looks to be in good hands and the young man from OK will give us depth. Nick Smith certainly brings a different dimension to the position as well as some starts.
You certainly cannot forget the great performances by Andrew Wingard. Lots have been rightfully said about him. A Cowboy named to the All American Freshman team. Andrew will bring the leadership and toughness that is being looked for the next three years.
Start with Brian Hill and what more can be said about this Cowboy. He will probably leave as the most heralded running back ever at UW. If he duplicates and adds to the rush totals and has break out games against Northern Illinois and at Nebraska, expect to see his name among the Heisman mentions.
Ryan Cummings a 3rd year starter and see him taking on a leadership role and a couple of very good Oline freshman as well with Zach Wallace and Kaden Jackson also adding a few lbs as well. Carl Granderson if he even adds 20Lbs and he will be a factor. Kellen Overstreet ( has he had surgery and out for 2016??--a loss to the program--Shaun Wick-sr, are you coming back this fall) if that is the case we will see Nico Evans more. You got to love all the experience that our DBs picked up last year and they will be experienced and tested players as Sophomores plus the UCLA and the Iowa JC transfers on campus. Throw in the growth of DJ May into his new position as linebacker in 2015 and now a solid linebacker player with plenty of speed for the 2016 season. Seniors Wacha and Nzeocha will be better. Much better. The presence of RFR Malauulu, Conner Cain, Chase Appelby ( Sr) in the interior play along with the growth of red shirt Freshman Ghaifan joining the actives this fall. A couple of very good Oline freshman as well with Zach Wallace and Kaden Jackson.
There are many others that I am sure I have omitted!
I look at our linebackers as a barometer of 2016. Wacha, DJ May and Nzeocha will get better. I believe much better. The Pokes will be better in 2016 ( hard not to be much better), but I believe the Pokes will be much better in 2016. I will take 5 or 6 wins in 2016. 2017 is my red line year! I can wait, I have waited for so long and I like what I am seeing..I like it a lot!
