Gretna (Neb.) Offensive Guard Patrick Arnold came to Laramie on a mission. He left Wyoming with a large haul of Cowboy clothing and some clarity on his future after committing to the Cowboy football team.

“I came there with that goal and I did it,” Arnold said. “It was great to see a good home game. There was a great atmosphere and a win against one of one of the toughest teams in the conference. It just confirmed my choice.”

Arnold has said for some time that he had hoped for a scholarship from his home-state Huskers, but if that didn’t come through, he loved the option of playing in Laramie for the Wyoming Cowboys.

Tuesday night of last week Arnold said he got a call from the Nebraska staff telling him the school wasn’t recruiting any more interior linemen. Two minutes later Wyoming Head Coach Craig Bohl called. It backed up his feeling that Wyoming was the place for him.

“I am worth a scholarship and I know Wyoming sees that,” Arnold said. “I literally made my decision to commit to Wyoming immediately after that phone call.”

A number of schools agreed with Wyoming’s assessment that Arnold is worthy of a scholarship. The Gretna Road Grader was offered by Air Force, Army, Navy, South Dakota, Colgate, and Columbia.

On Saturday morning, Arnold said he told Bohl he was ready to be a Wyoming Cowboy and the result was the head coaching jumping out of his chair to welcome Arnold to the Wyoming family. It was part of a very exciting Saturday morning.

“I got there about 11 a.m. and we went to the Brown and Gold Store and picked up some Cowboy apparel. Then I met with Coach Bohl and I committed during my conversation with him. I got to talk to other recruits and future teammates. We watched the game and after the game, I talked to Coach (Scott) Fuchs and then back home.”

Arnold said the Wyoming coaches have told him he will play center at the University of Wyoming and were able to hold up a tremendous example of what they believe he can grow into on and off-the-field in the person of Senior Center Chase Roullier.

“It came down to what was best for me and my future,” Arnold said. “Chase Roulier is doing great things at center and that is what they see me at. That is everything I strive to be.”

Now, Arnold said he will make the pivot from recruit to recruiter. He was in Laramie this weekend with two other offensive line prospects from the Cornhusker State and said he will be contacting them to get them in the boat.

“I do have some pretty good people skills and I am putting those to work to recruit future teammates,” Arnold said. “I have some friends in Nebraska who I think are a week or two out from committing. They know I will be on their butts to get that decision made. I want them to be my teammates.

“Wyoming has a great coaching staff. It is a team that is on the upswing. This team has a great future ahead of them and hopefully it is a team with some Mountain West Conference Championships in them. I am super excited about the future.”
