....what value does the Mountain West Conference have these days when San Jose St. can steal a Football title? SDSU, Boise St. and Fresno State can be excused—they’ve mostly dominated MWC football since 2013, prior to that it was TCU, BYU and Utah. Now we’re at a place where losing a loser like CSU can actually be a setback—because there’s no suitable replacement school that checks all the boxes that's willing to move to the conference.
When Boise and SDSU leave, the road to the MWC football title will likely go through where, ….Fresno, Logan or Reno? Honolulu maybe every 3-4 years? Maybe San Marcos Texas? Missoula? What real upgrades are left for us bottom-feeders? From UW’s standpoint, it's practically anybody really. We're in no position to be choosy. Neither is New Mexico. Or UNLV, etc. It’s unreasonable to hope that programs like Wyoming, New Mexico, UNLV and Hawaii can become consistent power programs in the conference to boost MWC appeal. Maybe if UW waits long enough, we’ll be the dominant power in the new-look 2035 version of the MWC...
While the MWC is still superior to the AAC, it's unsettling to know that MWC history has lacked the membership or leadership to be anything more than they are now, and that staying pat is the best (only?) option. Just wait to be eaten last.
I agree with the notion the MWC will stay at 10 schools if CSU and AFA leave, because right now, the MWC has little appeal to any reputable program looking to move up in the world; it’s basically a conference of dependent cubs suckling the hairy teat of two mother sows, Boise St. and SDSU. And weaning day is coming...
Thompson’s track record of mediocrity is clear, but there’s basically two (and on occasion) three schools doing the majority of the winning in football in the MWC. Perhaps CSU and Air Force have a crystal ball 10 years into the future and are getting the FO now before they end up playing East Central Texas State in a must-win game to stay in 3rd place in the Mountain division.
I think it was the Hair who said (paraphrasing here) that the MWC is the 6th best conference in FBS--like that actually counts for something...my guess though, is that there are schools in the MWC who think it does. While we’ve been waiting for the Hair to be a magician and pull magic tricks, the props he needs to do his tricks haven’t or are unable to keep up with audience demands…….
