So last year I find myself in London on a business trip. "How about going to see a Premier League game while in town?". Great, always wanted to get the "UK Soccer Hooligan Experience". Who we gonna see?"
"Well it is Arsenal (one of the big 4) and this awful team called Leceister (pronounced Lester) City. "
LC is in last place the worst team in the league and have only won 4 games. Emirates stadium in North London is a palace - easily the equal of any NFL stadium - strange Liquor rules due to the Emirates $$ - but a palace. Too bad they are not playing a "good team".
Well the lads from Leceister give them a game , yet lose 2-1, but I was impressed with them and the passion of their fans.
"Well it is their one season every 50 years to be in the Premier League and they should enjoy it, because they are clearly going down."
In the Premier League the bottom 3 of the 20 teams are booted out and the top 3 from the lower division move up. Kinda like if the bottom 3 of the P5 got booted and the top 3 of the G5 move up. Boy would that make College Football interesting.
So I start to follow the Leceister City Football Club (LCFC).....and as a Wyoming fan I feel a kin ship. WHY?
Well their stadium only holds 30,000 (sound familiar?)
They have the smallest fan base in the league (sound familiar?).
They come from a city that few respect and many consider to be a bit dumpy (sound familiar?)
Their total team payroll last year was "only" $32 million" which was less than the lowest paid individual starter for Manchester United. That's right this band of players no one wanted to recruit gets paid less as a team than the lowest paid starter (single player) for Manchester United. Sound Familiar? Feels kinda like the UW 1-2 star recruits going up against the Alabama 4-5 start recruits.
Well here's what happened over the past year.
(1) LCFC wins 6 of their last 8 and manages to stay out of the bottom 3 and lives to play another year in the Premier League.
(2) They replace their manager with a "washed up Italian" who has never won any kind of professional championship.
(3) They are picked to finish last and be relegated down - bookmakers set the odds of a LCFC Championship at 5000:1 and the commentators state even that is "not worth a penny!".
(4) LCFC starts out where they left off in the last 8 games of last year - they start to win.
(5) by December LCFC is actually in first place and the talk of the "big fade" or "big collapse' starts. Who do they think they are? No way will they "win the league". This fall is going to crush the Leceister supporters.
(6) They stop scoring goals....yet continue to win with defense. Winning 5 out of 6 by scores of 1-0. They just will not go down. (Sound like COWBOY TOUGH!)
(7) Two weeks ago their best player, (Jamie Vardy) gets hit with two yellow cards (which equals a red card) for "diving" and faking a tackle. He is booted from the game and suspended for the next two. What a crock of crap from the refs...surely they can not have little Leceister win this thing? I saw nothing in the replay to suggest any kind of fowl, contact was made, these guys always go dramatic. Yet with the League's highest goal scorer out they simply win anyway last week 4-0.
(8) Damn they have only lost 3 games all year and sit at the top at 22-10-3, 8 points clear!.
(7) With 3 games to go they can wrap up the title on Sunday with a win.
An absolute "nothing" team with no superstars just guys who work hard and play together well, is poised to win the biggest league title on the planet....much bigger than the NFL.
This is one of the greatest stories in Sport and if it happens will be great. As WYOMING fans I know you can relate.
