Jacob Jenkins is set to visit Laramie this weekend in his search for a place to play college football. Jenkins is a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder who made a name for himself as both a running back and a defensive end at Anthony Harper Chaparral High School.
According to Maxpreps.com, Jenkins rushed for 1,320 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, rushing for 8.2 yards per carry. He also caught seven passes for 146 yards and three more scores. Defensively, he accounted for 53 tackles, and 13 sacks last season. He said the Wyoming Cowboy football team wants him to play defensive end in college. He was named First Team All-State as a defensive end and was an honorable mention selection as a running back.
“They have talked about me talking at the defensive end position,” Jenkins said. “The Wyoming coaches believe they can help me grow as a defensive end player and just to get better at that position.”
This weekend will be Jenkins third trip to Laramie after attending an individual camp at Wyoming this summer, then again this fall for a home game at War Memorial Stadium.
“I have been there twice before so this time I am going to see coaches again and re-connect with everyone,” Jenkins said. “The first time I was up there for an individual camp and I thought it was in the middle of the summer and it was beautiful weather. I didn’t have anything to complain about other than the elevation.
“The second time I was there, it was during a home football game and it snowed a bit which I liked. I like the area Wyoming is in with the mountains close. I enjoyed it. It was a great environment. I took a campus tour and it was the first time I had seen the school in full tilt with college students there. It gave me a sense of what it would be like if I went there.”
In addition to Wyoming, Jenkins is also talking to Southwest Missouri State, Pittsburgh State, Washburn, and Fort Hayes State. Southwestern College is his first scholarship offer. Jenkins said he has been recruited through the year by Wyoming Assistant Coaches A.J. Cooper and Mike Bath. He said the coaches have hinted at a possible scholarship being offered and he would likely commit if it were.
“I’d really just like to see how the football players go about their day in the off-season and how they go through a day with lifting, class, and what a football player’s day-to-day life would be like," Jenkins added.
