A Wyoming football team hoping to shore up its depth on the offensive line has scheduled an official recruiting visit this weekend with Iowa Western Community College guard, Travis Zimmerman for this weekend. The 6-foot-3, 285-pounder is a Huxley, Iowa native who is beginning to see his recruiting profile rise. That is a marked improvement from where it started during his high school career.
"I got a lot of Division II offers out of high school and some I-AA looks," Zimmerman said. "I met the coaches here and they thought I could play at a higher level. I am a Presidential Scholar, so I took the opportunity to improve myself."
Zimmerman was a big part of the the Iowa Western Community College's 9-1 mark and conference title. IWCC is now preparing for the Graphic Edge Bowl in Cedar Falls, Iowa where they will take on Butler Community College. Zimmerman holds scholarship offers from Wyoming, Toledo, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Northern Iowa, Weber State, and Georgia State.
Zimmerman's trip to Laramie this weekend will be his second official visit of his recruitment, with his first visit being a journey to Toledo. He will have two years of eligibility left and will graduate in December, making himself available for spring football practice.
"I am looking to see what the atmosphere is like," Zimmerman said. "I think it will be cool. I am also a big hunter and fisherman. I think Wyoming will be right up my alley."
Zimmerman said offensive line coach Jim Harding has been his recruiting coach. He said he has been told he is a high target for the Cowboy coaches and someone who can use his athleticism to get on the field early.
"They think I could make an impact right away," Zimmerman said. "He said I am one of the top guys they want.
"I get out and run well," Zimmerman continued when asked what he does well. "I am a smart kid who knows when blitzes and stunts are coming. My feet and quickness are something coaches say they like about me. I can get out in space and I am used to playing in a quick tempo offense."
Zimmerman said he is starting to hear from more and more BCS-level teams, but if he likes what he sees this weekend, he said there is a slight chance his recruiting could end sooner than later.
"There are quite a few BCS schools that are starting to call, but these two will be big (his visits to Toledo and Wyoming)," he said. "If I like them then I will make a decision sooner rather than later."
