Being a big money business.

I saw these two articles this morning and they left me shaking my head.

ESPN & ABC (owned by Disney) and the SEC signed a 10 year contract for the rights to broadcast SEC football and basketball beginning in 2024. (Disney also owns 80% of the SEC Network)

The contract was for 3 BILLION DOLLARS. That’s 20 MILLION DOLLARS every Saturday during the football season.

Then to show how things are truly out of whack, Tennessee fired their DC on March 2. Normally that wouldn’t be huge news except Tennessee hired Kevin Steele as their ‘new’ DC in January 2021. Kevin Steele’s contract to be Tennessee’ DC was for $869,870/yr.

Tennessee decided to ‘go in a different direction and fired their head football coach. They hired Josh Heupel. Next Heupel hired a new staff which didn’t include Steele. Tennessee then terminated Kevin Steele without cause on March 2.

So Kevin Steele will be paid $860,870 without ever stepping on the field and after being employed by UT for less than 3 months.

So I ask these questions.

Has the SEC separated itself for the P5 and the rest of college football?

Will Div 1 college football now be divided into 3 ‘groups ’ U1 (Ultimate One, P4, and G5?

Will company’s pay the increased fee to advertise their product during an SEC football game so that Disney can make a profit?

Will Disney televise the ‘SEC Game of the Week’ on ESPN+ and make it a Pay for view?

Will the lower tier SEC games replace the G5 games that are broadcast every day of the week except Monday and Sunday?

Realistically how can any conference or university compete with the SEC financially?

Should the US Government prosecute College Athletic Conferences under the Sherman Anti Trust Act? (That’s a serious question)

With universities receiving this amount of money, how long will it be before players are paid big bucks to play college football and basketball?

If schools are getting this type of money shouldn’t the players be able to benefit?

How long will it be before a team actually strikes (refuses to play) unless they are paid to play college sports?

After all without the players there wouldn’t be any college sports.
