It's two Junior Days down and at least five camps to go for Fort Collins (Colo.) offensive tackle Salofi Gaoa over the next couple months. The Rocky Mountain High School lineman has been to Junior Days at Colorado and Wyoming this month. Starting in April, Gaoa will be in Texas, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and finally his own high school's camp.
"I want to get a feel for what the college level will be like," Gaoa said Sunday.
He is also looking for his travels in resulting in his first college scholarship offer. Gaoa said he has been in contact with Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Utah State of late.
"We don't have scholarship offers yet, but we have next visits planned with them," said Gaoa's mother, Rose. "From what our understanding was in visiting with the NCAA rep was they can't offer until July or August. So the coaches have told us 'we want you to come here,' but they haven't thrown out an offer just yet."
Gaoa was in Laramie this month for the Cowboys' first Junior Day. He said he was able to see the Wyoming facilities, War Memorial Stadium, as well as some of the Cowboy basketball team's contest with Colorado State. Gaoa characterized it as a good visit.
"I liked it." he said of his Wyoming visit. "I thought the coaches were very supportive and experienced. They had three back-to-back championships at North Dakota State."
Previous to his Wyoming visit, Gaoa was in Boulder to check out Colorado.
"I thought CU was great too," he said. "Their campus was really nice. Their coaches were pretty cool guys. Their stadium was really nice, so was the weight room."
Gaoa was named All-Conference last year for Coach Mark Brooks' Rocky Mountain squad. He said he was a better run blocker than a pass blocker and has done his homework to decide what sort of school he will thrive at the college level.
"Right now I am looking to see what kind of education a school offers," Gaoa said. "I am interested in a criminal justice degree to become an air marshall or SWAT team member, so the criminal justice program has to be pretty well off. I am interested in their training too, so I can see what they can do to help me become a better athlete and and possibly go pro. I also need to know If I do have any injuries while playing I would be taken care of instead of being left out in the cold."
The next step for Gaoa is to attend a Nike Camp in Dallas, which features days in both Houston and Dallas. Then, he will camp at Colorado before heading to Utah for the All-Poly Sports Camp and possibly a tour at Utah State. The tour will end in Laramie for a camp at Wyoming before attending his high school's camp.
