With the signing of Dut, it looks like we are set for the roster for next year. I think the Dut signing makes a lot of sense for the program and for the player. A few things I noticed from the highlight videos that are available:
1. CSI runs a lot of action that is similar to what Linder likes to do. They try to really spread you out and initiate a variety of action off of pick and roll. Dut appear to be pretty adept at navigating a high screen and finding open cutters or shooters. In particular, I noticed a few of his passes were to recipients that were not in his primary line of sight, he wasn't just driving and kicking to the corner. Williams was very good at this as well and I think that type of vision is hard to coach.
2. His shot appears kind of slow to me, not a quick release. However, you can't argue with 50% on a pretty decent volume. When Maldo is initiating the action, at worst Dut is a very dangerous shooter. I didn't see a ton of catch and shoot in the highlight videos as he was usually the one with the ball, but he should be a real threat. We will be at our best with Ike, but if he sits and HT has to play, our offense could still be really, really good. Dut, DuSell, Foster, and HT around the perimeter with Maldo going to work at the basket will be tough to defend. Can't leave any of those guys open.
3. Size - Looks to be a legit 6'4", definitely good size for this level.
4. Athleticism - Clearly not an above the rim player. Probably the biggest concern is how well he can finish in the paint against the length and athleticism in the MWC.
Overall, I think Dut seems like a great fit for what Linder does. For Dut, this is a great situation, an up and coming team with a huge gap at PG and a style that fits his skill set.
Not sure what the rotation will look like next year, but there is one thing that must be acknowledged. When Linder took the job, he said they would not compromise on shooting during the recruiting process and he is clearly a man of his word. Since taking over he has signed 12 players, all of the perimeter players have been plus shooters. DuSell and Jeffries are about as dangerous as any shooters we have had, Dut shot 50% on good volume at JC, Reynolds shot over 40% in HS, Barnhart is primarily a perimeter shooter from his tape. Wenzel projects to be a plus shooter. Even Lamont, in his brief time, could definitely shoot from the perimeter.
Other than true bigs (Nelson and Ike), we are bringing in shooting all over the floor.
One last thought. We have a lot of players at similar stages in their careers (3 and 4 years of eligibility remaining) and only 200 minutes to go around. Someone has to be 10th or 11th in the rotation and it will be interesting to see how that develops.
