The MW RPI shows just how weak the league is
Boise- 38
NM- 54
UW- 61 (was 56 before loss to BSU)
Fresno- 120
USU- 182
UNLV- 203
SDSU- 205
Nev- 245
Sheep- 279
SJSU- 297
AF- 298
This year Cowgirls played the following OOC schedule:
SoDak St- 27
St. Mary's- 50
Idaho- 87
Pacific- 99
Mt. St- 147
DU- 166
N. Texas- 177
Those 7 schools RPI was better than 7 MW teams. So the OOC schedule was not a bad schedule although it could have been stronger by not playing Chadron and Colorado-Colorado Springs and adding in teams from the area such as:
Gonzaga- 13
BYU- 26
So Dak- 40
UNI- 91
Utah- 92
Id St- 108
No. Co-128
NM St- 138 (NMSU had a better RPI than 7 MW schools)
The best comparison to Cowgirl Basketball is Billy Beane and the Oakland A's. His use of sabermetrics is based on number to maximize success over the 162 game season, not a short series. that's why they've been fairly strong in the regular season but haven't won many playoff series. Coach Legerski recruits players for his system which is designed to provide success over the regular season but may not be strong in a one game series. He had the nation's top 3 point shooter, the team was in the top 5 at the three point line and pretty high in FT shooting.
The bottom line for the NCAA is that the MW will only be a 1 bid league until the league from top to bottom gets stronger. Only 3 teams in the top 100 isn't getting it done. And at how many of the MW teams is there a priority in helping the Women's BBall program to succeed.
UW could schedule UConn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Miss. St and other top schools to get a high RPI but if the bottom line is only 1 team gets in to the NCAA's then it becomes a crap shoot, especially if a team gets hot at tournament time.
