After years where tight ends were an endangered species on the Wyoming roster, the Cowboy coaching staff has been on the road this spring with tight ends in their sites. Case in point - Little Rock (Ark.) Catholic High School tight end Aaron Hamaker.
Hamaker is a 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end who holds scholarship offers from Wyoming as well as Troy. The big man from Arkansas said his first scholarship offer came from the Cowboys.
"They (Wyoming) offered about a month ago," Hamaker said. "Wyoming offered first. My coach sent them my film. My dad contacted them to see if they saw the film. They said they liked it and I was to call them. I talked to them the next day and they extended an offer. It was unbelievable. I will be the first person in my family to get an offer from anyone. I was the first in a while at Catholic to get an offer and Wyoming being a DI school, it was just great."
Hamaker said he has seen some Wyoming football games and he is planning to visit Wyoming this summer to meet the coaches face-to-face and tour the facilities. He said he isn't concerned about distance from home.
Wyoming isn't the only school after Hamaker. He said Troy spoke to him recently and offered a scholarship.
"It (the Troy offer) makes me make a decision now," Hamaker said. "They talked to me a little bit. I know in the past they were more of a spread team. They assured me that if I did come and if I deserved to get on the field, they will run more of a tight end set and take advantage of my skills."
In addition to Wyoming and Troy, Hamaker said he is hearing from UConn and is getting some interest from schools in the Southeastern Conference. He said he anticipates camping with Wyoming and several SEC schools in hopes of getting an offer and believes his skill set is well-suited to the brand of football played in the SEC.
"Just given the style of play, I think I am more suited to play in the SEC than somewhere like the Pac-12 or something like that," he said. "I am more of an on-the-line tight end. I think I am a little too big to be spread out that much."
Hamaker said he expects to make his college choice on Signing Day of 2014.
