While the Wyoming football season was coming to a crescendo on the field on Saturday, Wyoming’s football future was also unfolding in the bleachers of War Memorial Stadium. The Cowboy coaches brought in at least eight players for official visits during the Mountain West Conference Title Game including several potential future Cowboys.
Quarterback target, Tyler Vander Waal is a 6-foot-3, 210-pounder from Christian Brothers High School who sports offers from Wyoming, Ball State, Northern Arizona, and Dixie State. His Christian Brothers High School is 11-2 this season and will play next Friday for the Division III title in California, thanks in part to Vander Waal’s 2,800 yards and 23 touchdowns through the air and another six on the ground. He said he likes what he saw in Laramie and has some decisions to make going forward.
“The visit went very well,” said Vander Waal. “It was very fun to go see the Mountain West Championship Game live. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and how the other recruits and players and I got along. The coaches told me that I'd be a great fit for the offense and I could have a very good future after Josh (Allen) graduates. I left with a lot of new thoughts in my head that I have to think about.”
Vander Waal said specifically he needs to determine if he wants to de-commit from Ball State and commit to Wyoming. He said he liked seeing Wyoming’s commitment to Coach Craig Bohl with a new seven-year contract extension.
“He told me that I could lead that team to a New Years six bowl game and over throw Boise's power in the Mountain West," said Vander Waal's. "I’ll probably take my official visit to Ball State this weekend and then have a good idea for where I want to go.”
In addition to Tyler Vander Waal, the Cowboys also hosted three star wide receiver CJ Coldon. The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder from Belleville, Ill. has his choice of schools pining for him, including Wyoming, Miami (OH), New Mexico, Bowling Green, Southern Illinois, and North Dakota State. But this weekend was his opportunity to visit Wyoming and he said the visit did not disappoint.
“The visit was great,” he said. “It was very different but it was a good different. The highlights were the fans they showed major love to me, and they didn't know me so I imagined me there at Wyoming, and how much better it would be. The coaches told me they want me to be a Cowboy. They were very authentic and genuine. They keep it real and they want to better you not only as a football player, but a better man and a better all around person. They want you to be successful.
“Wyoming is definitely a top option and opened my eyes a lot during the visit.”
The next step for Coldon involves taking it slow and discussing his recruitment with his parents. He did not rule out taking other visits.
Fellow Saint Louis-area wide receiver Reggie Crawford was also in Laramie this weekend for his official visit. The three-star prospect from Chaminade College Prep claims scholarship offers from New Mexico, Illinois, Illinois State, Ball State, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
"The visit went well,” Crawford said. “It was my first time being out there to Laramie so I didn't know what to expect. Beside the cold, the the fans were unbelievable. They were supportive and were really enthusiastic. You can tell the whole area is behind Wyoming football for sure. The people of Laramie made me feel comfortable as well as the players.”
Crawford will visit New Mexico next weekend.
Wauwatosa West (Wisc.) Defensive End Javaree Jackson also spent his weekend in Laramie. Jackson is a 6-foot-4, 227-pounder who may be somewhat under recruited right now. Jackson said he enjoyed his time with the Wyoming players and the time his mother spent with the Wyoming coaching staff told him one thing specifically.
“From what my mom said they really want me,” Jackson said.
While he has not committed yet officially, Jackson made it clear he likes what he sees in Laramie.
“I just told the coaches that now that I visited the school my commitment to Wyoming is higher,” he said.
Avante Cox, a Rochester (Ill.) native said he was also impressed with Wyoming this weekend. At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, Cox runs a 4.45 in the 40-yard dash and holds scholarship offers from Eastern Illinois, Wyoming, Western Illinois, Illinois State, and South Dakota. While Cox, a future engineering major, was in between classes, he did manage to text out one comment regarding his visit this morning.
“The visit was great!! Its somewhere I'd like to go,” Cox wrote.
