Many high school athletes have a choice in deciding which school they want to attend and some even have a choice of sports to play in college. Cheyenne (Wyo.) East junior Ben Wisdorf fits into the latter category.
The 6-foot-1, 183-pound athlete was an All-State linebacker for the State Class 4A Champion Thunderbirds last year before donning a swim cap to win the state title in the 50 freestyle. The result of a successful junior year is the option of playing either sport at some level in college.
"I want to go to a bigger school, probably DI if I do play any sport," Wisdorf said. "I want to go to medical school. I want someone to see me and give me a chance at playing Division I football. I don't know how good I can be in football. The training at the college level will be so much better than the high school level, I would like the opportunity to see how good I can be."
On the defensive side of the ball, Wisdorf ended the season with 42 tackles, four interceptions, two blocked kicks, a fumble recovery, and two passes broken up. As a wideout, Wisdorf ended the season with 16 catches for 201 yards and a score.
"Coaches like my big-play ability," Wisdorf said when asked what about feedback from coaches. "I am not the fastest or the strongest, but I am in the right place at the right time all the time. Coaches say they like my football IQ and physicality."
Wisdorf is still early in his recruiting process, but said he has been in contact with Chadron State, Black Hills State, the University of Colorado and has been to Wyoming's camps and met their coaching staff. For now, he will concentrate on trying to help Cheyenne East to another state title.
"I think we are going to try to improve on what we can do," said Wisdorf. "We lost two games last year and maybe we can have that perfect season that has never been done at East.
"Individually, I had a slow start last year and had to build up my confidence as the season went along," he added. "Hopefully I can start the year confident and make even bigger plays this year."
