An already good Wyoming recruiting Class of 2017 got a whole lot better Thursday night as Sacramento defensive end and three-star prospect, Victor Jones announced he is going to be a Cowboy.
The 6-foot-5, 238-pound Jones selected Wyoming over scholarship offers from Fresno State, Hawaii, Cal, Colorado State, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon State, Utah, and Weber State.
He was named All-Conference after accounting for 102 tackles and six sacks last season. Presently, he shares the honor as the top recruit in the class, according to Rivals.com, with his high school teammate, and fellow future Cowboy Ryan Gatoloai.
“Wyoming has been on my mind for a while and I figured, what am I waiting for? Let’s just do it,” Jones said when asked why he committed on Thursday. “I feel I can go there, become a better football player there, become a better person and I can make a difference there. I feel I can help to make the program better there.”
Jones visited Laramie along with Gatolai in September for the UC-Davis game. He said there was a number of people in his life to share his decision with but perhaps none were as excited for him as Gatoloai.
“Ryan was fired up,” Jones said. “He was happy to play more football with me. He is my brother and we are going to be playing together in college just like we did in high school. Ever since he committed he was like, come on brother, let’s go together.”
In what he said was a feeling of relief, Jones said he committed to Wyoming Recruiting Coordinator Gordie Haug and Wide Receivers Coach Mike Grant today. He said the call to Laramie went well and he is now excited to have the next chapter of his life put together as well as the knowledge he will be attending college for free.
“I have a few offers and I think it surprised (the Wyoming coaches) a little bit because I didn’t make anyone feel like they had a better chance than any other school,” Jones said. “They were definitely fired up. I told them I am ready to commit and become a Cowboy and they sad, it is all good, you got a spot and you will be here in June.
“Ever since my visit I knew I could be comfortable there, go there and I have a great relationship with the coaching staff and I can be a great football player in Wyoming.”
