Most campus visits allow you the ability to walk on the field of play for that specific school. Very few offer the chance for a recruit to storm the field. Saturday’s frenzied ending to Wyoming’s 30-28 win over Boise State allowed Lacey, Washington. running back Trey Dorfner the opportunity to join a mob of Wyoming students at midfield for a celebration after the final gun sounded.
“The game was crazy,” Dorfner said. “That was the most intense game I have ever been to. That safety was mind-blowing. I did go storming the field with the student section. I had to - that is something I had to do while I had the chance."
Dorfner said he enjoyed the game day atmosphere and the sense that Wyoming is continuing to build towards something impressive.
“It did have an effect on my choice because of what they are doing and how the program is going places,” he said.
Storming the field was part of a very memorable day for Dorfner who committed to the University of Wyoming football team earlier in the day. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound running back came to Laramie considering offering his verbal pledge to the coaching staff after a visit with his grandmother. After a meeting with Wyoming Head Coach Craig Bohl he said he called his grandmother back and told her Laramie was the place for him.
“She told me to do what was best for me and I took that to heart,” Dorfner said. “I talked to Coach Bohl and we had a conversation about it. He said we really want you here and he said if you are going to make a commitment be straight up with it because we take commitments serious at Wyoming, and I took that to heart. I called gramma after the meeting and she thought it was a great thing for me. Then I talked to Bohl and made the commitment there.
“He was really excited. He was not as excited as I was. But he was very excited.”
Dorfner is a rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals.com and has enjoyed a strong season with his River Ridge High School squad, which is 7-1 after losing its first game of the season last week. Dorfner has over 1,000 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns this season playing running back, wide receiver, cornerback, safety, and kick returner. He said Wyoming has told him they want him to play running back for the Pokes.
“When they first offered me, I wasn’t sure,” Dorfner said. “I didn’t know what to do. I thought that it was great that I was getting noticed, but I wasn't’ going to take for anything bigger than that. But then when they were trying to get me to come on the visit you could see they cared about me and that made me look at them.
“They were my first offer and they showed me trust and that they were there from day one,” Dorfner continued. “They weren’t going to sway. There wasn’t a ‘we’ll think about you and let you know’ or anything like that. To have that opportunity and to have that loyalty from a college really sticks in my head and to go on the visit makes it 10 times better.”
