Call it love at first sight - or hand shake as it were - led to a commitment from the highest rated recruit in Wyoming’s 2017 recruiting class, Sacramento linebacker Ryan Gataloai.

“I remember when I first saw Coach Bohl and shook his hand and started talking to him I thought this might be the one,” said Gataloai. “You could tell there was something going on in that locker room that is definitely making the team go up.”

The net result was a text from the 6-foot, 210-pound Gataloai to Wyoming recruiting coordinator Gordie Haug on Tuesday night informing the Cowboy coaching staff that he plans to wear the Brown and Gold.

“I told Coach Gordie Haug first - I texted him and let him know and he was, ‘that’s great,’” Gataloai said. “Then he told Coach Bohl and Coach Bohl gave me a call. We had a good conversation. He told me that he was very happy and Wyoming got a little better tonight. Wyoming is excited for me and I am excited for Wyoming.”

Gatoloai is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and holds scholarship offers from Nebraska, Wyoming, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, Nevada, and New Mexico. He is also hearing from several other schools like Utah, Colorado, Boise State, Fresno State and Utah State.

Gatoloai visited Laramie early this season and said since his time on-campus he has been pondering his next step and where he wants to spend his college career.

“After I came back from my visit I have been pondering and thinking is Wyoming the place for me?,” Gatoloai said. “I asked can I see myself living there after college? Obviously Wyoming won. I have been talking about it with my family and just praying and trying to figure it out. We decided as a family why not make it happen as soon as possible, so they know I am ready to go.

“It feels good. It feels some relief finally.”

For now, Gatoloai will help his Inderkum High School try to win a state title after going 7-2 this season. He said he is also spending a little time talking Wyoming to his high school teammate and fellow three-star recruit Victor Jones.

“In practice I get in his ear a little bit and tell him a little Cowboy this and a little Cowboy that," Gatoloai said. "But I am not sure what he is going to do. He needs to find a place for him that he feels is right, but Wyoming could have a shot with him.”
