Boise was pretty mediocre/poor JC program from 1933 to 1946. Hired Lyle Smith in 1947. Went 37-0 before losing a game. Smith turned down a HC position at his alma mater Idaho in 1954. He coached 21 seasons through 1967 and finished with a 150-25-6 record (.845).

Almost every coach since has finished with a BSU winning percentage above .500 for their times here. The one exception is Houston Nutt (5-6 in 1997).

Most of the recent guys are part of the Jim Sochor UC-Davis coaching tree. Petersen/Hawkins (as well as Gary Patterson/Mike Belloti). And then dudes that those guys mentored.

If you want a Davis-trained OC with MW experience there is one who could be had for cheap-

Dirk Koetter in 1998. He went 26-10. Dan Hawkins was his special teams coach.

Hawkins took over in 2001 and went 44-7. Chris Petersen was his offensive coordinator.

Petersen took over in 2006 and went 81-10. Bryan Harsin served as one of his offensive coordinators.

Harsin took over in 2014 and went 69-19. Andy Avalos served as one of his defensive coordinators.

Avalos took over in 2021 and is currently 4-4 i
