I have watched Bohl's press conference three times now. Tried to read between the lines so to speak.
First takeaway, the one I watched was edited and I am unsure as to why. My guess is there may have been some language?? Anyone else notice this?
If you haven't listened to the presser, please take the time to go back and listen to him. He speaks like the old Defensive minded war horse that he is. For me, with a new DC this year, I am very proud of our defense for everything they went through this year. It is not an accident that since Stannard, we are on our 3rd Defensive Coordinator/Coaching Staff and still very successful. This is trademark Bohl and his fingers are all over this.
Second takeaway, I am starting to really get an uneasy feeling that Bohl and his Offensive Coordinator really do NOT have a good grasp on offensive philosophy, offensive play calling, and the subtle nuances as to what it really takes to make an offense click at the college level. Is it execution or is it the actual play design/play calling? I lean towards the actual design/calling philosophy. Why? Simple. In a Pro Style/Pro Set offense Play Action is a huge component. If you don't deploy Play Action, the Passing Game gets more difficult. Has anyone ever seen us run Play Action? What about efficient Screens? Draw Plays? Bouncing outside - Off Tackle? Anything that resembles a Pro Style/Pro Set Offense other than A Gap? Where did the Jet Sweep go this year? In order for Pro Style O to work, it is imperative that we stretch the field from sideline to sideline. We haven't done that all year.
What if Bohl really doesn't grasp an offensive philosophy other than fingers in the dirt smash mouth football?
For this to change, Bohl is going to need to tear the O philosophy to the ground and rebuild it. Can he do it? Yes, No, Maybe? I am not sure. From my perspective, he needs to find an OC that can take the reins and prove to Bohl that it can be done. How do we afford that or how do we accommodate that? By transitioning away from someone else. Bohl has to commit 100% to improving or it will be his downfall at UW. Bohl, and to a larger extent Burman, can't afford another season like the one in 2020. Money is the issue and it is only going to get tighter for the Athletic Department.
Lastly, as for Bohl, I like the guy. I have sat and talked with him. He is an intelligent, nice and good person. He is perfect for Wyoming. I don't want him fired. We can't afford it.
