The stress level was high in the Bettencourt household of Meridian, Idaho last week as University of Wyoming football commit, Richard Bettencourt and his family waited to hear who the new head football coach at Wyoming would be named.
Sunday night former North Dakota State coach Craig Bohl was named as the 32nd football coach in Wyoming history.
As soon as I heard the news of Coach (Dave) Christensen being fired, I was hoping that they honor my scholarship," Bettencourt said Sunday. "I want to go to the University of Wyoming. That is the school I want to further my education at and play football at.
"For a couple days we were pretty stressed out about what was going to happen," he continued. "But the University and Athletic Director was really quick about getting someone good for the program in there. All the stress is relieved so far. I think this is good for the program."
Bettencourt is a 6-foot-3, 288-pound offensive and defensive lineman, who has been recruited by Wyoming as an offensive guard and center, though he said he may also get a look at defensive line.
This season he was named All-Conference as well as Academic All-Conference. All-State awards for Idaho football players are expected out by December 15th. Bettencourt is on track to graduate later this month and come to Laramie in time for the spring semester.
"Best case scenario is this staff comes in, they want to keep everything with me rolling in graduating early and coming out in January," he said.
As of Sunday afternoon, Bettencourt said he had not yet spoken with anyone from the new staff but did try to watch the press conference from home. He was then going to call Coach Jim Harding at UW to see if his planned official visit to Wyoming was still on for this week.
"My plan was to take an official visit this upcoming weekend," Bettencourt said. "Since this has been going on, I don't know if the visit is going on or not. I am sure I will talk to the new coach and staff this week and get that figured out."
Bettencourt has been doing his homework on the new staff and said he was impressed with Bohl's record at North Dakota State.
"He brought them up from a Division II school to a FCS school and won," Bettencourt said. "He has had two national championships there and even before ND State, he was at Nebraska and helped them win a ton. What I have found out from this guy is he likes to win and every team he has been with, he has been successful. He is doing something right. That really excites me."
