Last season Moemeka averaged 11 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 5.2 blocked shots per game for the Odmar Christian Academy in Tampa. Moemeka committed to the Wyoming basketball team this afternoon spurning scholarship offers from Murray State, Georgia Southern, and Western Kentucky among others.
"Really it was the staff, the players and the campus was beautiful," Moemeka said when asked why he committed to Wyoming. "When I had told some people I was going to visit Wyoming they told me it was desert, but when I got there I saw how beautiful it was. I also like Coach (Larry) Shyatt. He is an amazing dude. He is like a father figure and a coach at the same time."
To hear Tim Keeley say it, the University of Wyoming is getting a gem in its newest member. Keeley coached Moemeka this summer as a part of the Southeast Elite Florida squad.
"My comparison of him as a player is Dennis Rodman," Kelley said. "He is very versatile. He can guard a two, or even a seven-footer in the post and he protects the rim very well. He is a big-time shot blocker. He is one of the better athletes we saw on the circuit this year. He can jump out of the gym. He catches lobs that you would have thought there was no way he could get to."
Keeley said he has seen improvement from Moemeka in his mid-range jumper and his ability to take direction from individual skills work and translate it to the court. Keeley said he considers Moemeka to be academically gifted.
While the Wyoming coaching staff, Wyoming fans, and even Andrew Moemeka himself are happy with the 6-foot-8 forward from Tampa's recent commitment to the University of Wyoming basketball team, there is one person whose happiness by the commitment trumps them all.
"It feels good to have my college decision made," Moemeka said. "Mom is really happy, so that is the most important thing."
"Every time you see him play he is improving," Keeley said.
For Moemeka his future in Wyoming will start out as a power forward, though he may take on an assignment of guarding a small forward. The future International Business major said his visit this weekend to Laramie centered on getting to know the team itself better.
"I hung out with the team a lot," Moemeka said. "We toured campus. I got to see the new arena, we went underground to look at the new locker rooms and we watched some videos. I was able to see a highlight video of the season, I was able to see some videos of the guards and the bigs so I have an idea for what my role will be next year."
News of Moemeka's commitment was somewhat slow to the Wyoming head coach as Moemeka announced his decision to Assistant Coach Allen Edwards via text. Moemeka said Edwards shared the text with Shyatt who didn't initially understand he was accepting a commitment via text.
"On the way to the airport, he called and asked how I was doing and I told him I had already committed," Moemeka said. "He said, Oh my gosh, I didn't even know that. It was hilarious."
"He has high upside," Keeley said. "I think Coach Allen Edwards has done a tremendous job of finding a diamond in the rough. I think he went through a late growth spurt last year. If he were 6-foot-7 last year we would have known about him."
