Watching the Pokes almost give up another lead, got me thinking on basketball has changed. Is it just me or did a 20 point lead, not that long ago seemed insurmountable? Now teams on all levels come back from being down 20 plus, all the time. CSEWE pulled one out at SDSU this season and the Pokes have nearly gacked up several. It seems like even on the pro level, teams come out on fire and hit a bunch of 3s and get big leads, only to cool off...but they keep shooting because they are taught to keep shooting.
I am starting to show my age, I think. I kinda miss the two ball. The mid range jumper. I am told that more scoring is exciting and yet, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Shaq, Hakeem, etc dominated the NBA for my entire youth and none of them relied on the 3. Heck only Bird would even be considered a 3 point shooter. In today's NBA, Shaq probably would drop in the draft because he couldnt shoot the damned 3.
So back to the Pokes. I guess I am just not a fan of the offensive strategy of having one guy dribble around while 3 or 4 guys camp out at the 3 point line. We definitely have the potential to make this offense work at a high level but perhaps until we learn to defend, giving up big leads will be the norm...or will it? I am not sure if this isnt just part of the new offense and even the best defensive teams will find ways to shoot themselves out of the lead.
