1. MWC did nothing to distinguish itself this weekend. It was 1-11 and the victory was in a conference game, Air Force beating San Jose State 37-14. In 10 non-conference losses, MWC teams outscored average 39.7-16.2. Doesn't bode well for extra income from a invite to one of those six big payday bowls.
2. Cowboys defense was exposed. Freshmen will take a beating but the veteran players left plenty to be desired, too. Worst part is watching the same play be run successful time and time again. At some point you would think the light bulb would go on and someone would figure out when the Eastern Michigan running back is taking the direct snap he is going to carry the ball and someone might want to go directly after him.
3. Josh Allen provided early hope. He has some life. He had some confidence. He had a strong arm and added dimension of an ability to run. But before we could get too excited he decided to take on a linebacker and wound up with what appears to be a broken shoulder. Well, medical redshirt is likely but won't help this year.
4. Nick Smith looked nervous initially, but as the No. 3 QB I wonder how many reps he had we the top unit. He never settled in with the passing game, but was able to orchestrate the running game and showed a toughness to pick up key yardage. And truth be told with the defense stepping up in the first half the offense had enough to get a victory. It wasn't like Eastern Michigan ever backed up. Starters were in at game's end.
5. The running game does exist. Brian Hill is a force and is going to get better. The presence of Wick gives the Cowboys a quality 1-2 punch, and provides the coaching staff with the opportunity to make sure Hill stays strong during the game.
6. Hoping that Hill is ready for Washington State. His last carry he was slow getting up and in final series Nico Evans was at running back, not Hill nor Wick.
7. Freshmen dominated defensive back field had its hands full against Eastern Michigan. Well it better step it up because Washington State is going to go straight at them. That's the Cougars style. They did rebound from a season-opening loss at home to Portland State with a 37-34 win at Rutgers. More than that Luke Falk was 47-for-66 with four touchdowns and 478 yards passing.
8. I like freshman defensive end Carl Granderson. He only has a listed 200 pounds on his 6-foot-5 frame, but seems to be in on most first down situations, and shows a quickness and ability to get to the ball.
9. Have to finish off on defense. Five times defense had Eastern Michigan in 3rd and long (more than five years needed for a first down). One series ended with an Eastern Michigan incompletr pass. The four other 3rd-and-long? Eastern Michigan converted a first down each time, averaging 29 yards a play -- 21 yards, 17 yards, 64 yards and 14 yards.
10. Hey, the band was great and the music didn't blare.
