As down as Cowboy fans may be consider the MWC is now 2-23 in non-conference games against FCS teams. the only wins would be Hawaii 28-20 against Colorado and Boise state 16-13 against Washington. Yes, CSU had its big season opening blowout against Savannah State, 65-13, but has since lost to Minnesota and Colorado. Savannah State, meanwhile, enjoyed an off week and then bounced back on Saturday for a 52-9 loss to Akron.
1. Defense made huge adjustments. What unscored how much they came around is that in 3rd quarter, after both sides had a chance to make adjustments, Wash St had three possessions. All three were 3-and-out.
2. New look with Brian Hill in the Wildcat. Liked how first time in formation Hill handed off. Got away from that, though, later in game and just ran. To make that play work he has to hand off on occasion to keep defenses honest. Nice job of adapting play selection.
3. Cameron Coffman has a legit arm, and will stay in pocket as long as possible to find receivers. He gets distance and accuracy. Looked much more relaxed at Washington State than he did against North Dakota. I'm sure the knee is part of his problem but is a pocket passer and no threat to tuck and run. Has to be willing to give up a ball, though, rather than suffer a 16 yard sack in which he twice got out of the grasp of a tackler before being sacked.
4. Eddie Yarbrough looked like Eddie Yarbrough. He had some enthusiasim and body language that spoke loudly, to meiton two sacks. Need him big time for the defense to click.
5. Carl Granderson continues to become more of the game play. He is usually in on 1-and-10 in place of Yarbrough, but more than a few times in the second half Sunday on the next play Yabrough would returna nd Granderson would slip to the other side.
6. D.J. May can return kicks and play linebacker. He was 4-for-122 yards in kickoff returns. HE also had seven tackles, including two passes broken up. Sure he was excited that friends and family came over the Cascades to see him. Puttng him at linebacker really strengthens that aspect of the defense.
7. Mistakes did cost. Washington State came up with 10 points off a recovery of a Gentry fumble and late-game interception of Coffman. Gentry took one heck of a hit and Coffman was trying to a miracle late in the game.
8. Wingard is for real. Second game in a row the safety led the team in tackles, this time with 12, six solo. He's quick and can cover a lot of ground.
9. Our young defensive backs are quick. They did not look like toast. They were in decent coverage, and kept Washington State from being able to really open up the passing game with deep plays.
10. I wish Tristan Bailey nothing but the best, and he is solid on extra points, but field goals. .... That continues to be a concern. Maybe there is a hope for the future at Natrona County High School, but not sure what's going to happen for this year.
