LOGAN, Utah (Jan. 10, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys, who are playing with only eight scholarship players fell on the road on Tuesday to the Utah State Aggies by a score of 83-63 in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah. The Pokes were without the services of leading scorer Noah Reynolds and Brendan Wenzel amongst other key contributors.

“This was probably an accumulation of a lot of things,” UW Head coach Jeff Linder said. When you have seven or eight guys available to start the game and then Jake (Kyman) got back spasms and couldn’t continue it makes it tough. And then we were playing a really good team in a tough environment. There have been a lot of teams come in here and feel what we felt here tonight.

But there are no excuses. As I told our guys, we had enough in that locker room to give ourselves a chance to win this game. But there has to be a certain level of effort to win that and you have to be able to go to the basket and finish and you have to be able to make the extra pass. You can’t get sped up by the crowd. It would be one thing if we were a young team, but we are an older team who shouldn’t get sped up in an environment like this but that is what happened.”

The Cowboys were held to 39 percent from the field on the night and were held to only 13 three-point attempts, as Wyoming averaged 26 per game heading into the contest. The Aggies shot 51 from the field on the night and shot 44 percent from behind the arc, as they averaged 10.4 per game to lead the nation. Utah State held a 43-34 advantage on the glass and added 21 points in the fast break.

Wyoming was led Hunter Maldonado with 20 points on the night for back-to-back games with 20 points. He moved over 1,900 career points in the contest. Ethan Anderson added 10 for his fourth game in double-figures this season. Xavier DuSell added 10 points for back-to-back games in double-figures for the first time this season. Jeremiah Oden added 13 points and nine rebounds in the contest for three-straight games in double-figures.

The Pokes opened the contest 2-of-8 from the field and the Aggies used an 8-0 to take a 14-5 lead on the Cowboys in the opening five-plus minutes. Utah State was 5-of-7 to open the contest. Oden stopped the run with a layup for a 14-7 game with 13:39 left in the first half.

After the Aggies pushed the lead to 10 on a Taylor Funk three-pointer, Xavier DuSell added a and-one play for a 17-10 game at the 12:04 mark of the first frame. Ethan Anderson would make it a make it a 19-14 game for the Aggies with nine minutes left with a pair of layups, but the Aggies went on a 7-0 run to make it a 26-14 game with under 7:30 left in the opening frame.

The Pokes would hold USU without a basket for three minutes and made it a 28-20 game with five minutes left in the half with buckets from Max Agbonkpolo and Jake Kyman. The Aggies built the lead to 13 points and funk added another three-pointer in the final minute of the half with the Aggies taking a 40-36 lead into the break.

The Pokes opened the half on an 8-2 run to make it a 52-34 game with 18:14 left in the game. Maldonado led the charge for the Pokes with seven points. The Aggies would then go on a 12-2 run to take a 54-36 lead with 15:34 to play.

DuSell would heat up with a pair of triples, but the Pokes would still trail 59-44 with just over 12 minutes to play. But the Aggies would continue the hot shooting going 8-of-10 from the field for a 64-48 lead halfway through the half.

The Pokes would hold the Aggies scoreless for nearly three minutes, but the Pokes could not chip into the lead trailing 66-50 with under seven minutes remaining. The Aggies would build the lead making five-straight baskets and the Pokes went 1-of-9. Utah State end up taking the contest 83-63.

The Aggies were led by Funk with 22 points. He was 4-of- 8 from behind the arc. Wyoming held the nation’s leading three-point shooter Steven Ashworth to 0-of-3 from behind the arc.

The Cowboys return home to take on the Boise State Broncos on Saturday evening in a 9 p.m. start in a contest on FS1.

POKEBALL

Watching all of our games so far of course disappointed like all of us. Few teams have been wracked with injuries like ours. But, the Pokes carry on, they fight throughout the games, and 5 of them or so just lost by 5 or fewer. The Pokes battled last night, never giving up. I am glad G. Ike is not playing adding a few more good players next year we will be stronger. We will miss Maldonado, I wish him the best. Oh, I hate the Utah Fans, and can only say we kicked their ass in FB 28-14., and have the Rifle.

I Love this group of GUTSY, TALENTED Cowboys!

This understaffed group of gutsy, talented Cowboys, all playing almost every minute without a blow, have played two very talented teams to the wire, back-to-back! I love watching this team, as much as any I've watched in my 62 years of watching college basketball and see a strong finish if we get all but Ike back. If we get Ike back in late January, Nelli bar the door, the COWBOYS ARE COMING!!!

NET rankings

I see that NM has dropped to #50 and SDSU is now #24. Five MWC teams in the top 50. We clearly had more trouble with SD. No rest for our kids with USU at #26! Link

I didn't realize that NM had lost to Fresno in Fresno on Jan. 3, 67-71 and to UNLV at home on Jan. 7, 77-84. Sure would have been nice to beat them here in Laramie. They play SDSU on Jan. 14 in SD.

SDSU-Model MWC Program

Year after year SDSU brings a deep, talented physical program. It makes a huge difference. While I thought they would put us away in the 2nd quarter, the Pokes kept it hot-until late in the game, but didn't have enough to bump a lead to 5-6 points. We desperately need size--that can contribute. SDSU guard play is stable, poised and effective. We have the three (which was great today) but their makeup kept them in two-possession leads for most of the game. That's tough to do on the road.

What baffles me is why Poke basketball chooses to go for skinnies who can shoot threes rather than go for a balance of physical players who also can shoot threes. Finesse over physicality. It's been that way for years, with SDSU showing all the teams in the MWC the correct path. Which has proven to be the more consistent winning formula in MWC basketball (actually since WAC days)for the last 15+ years? Who had the better game-Jaedon Ledee (8 pts. 9 rebounds in 18 minutes or his matchup Jeremiah Oden (15 pts. 7 reb. in 39 minutes) ? SDSU had nine guys who scored today-we had six. If Ike had played today, he may very well have had a nice game, but I suspect Ledee and Keshad Johnsone ( 7pts 2 reb. in 17 min) would have wore him down, making him pile up fouls, with no suitable substitute. Hopefully Linder really focuses on finding us a couple of more bigs, and not 6'10 skinnies. Well into the season, our transfers have not provided the level of depth we had hoped. Even a decent backup to Ike may have been enough to pull out the win today.

Pokes are hanging tough, but need a breakthrough. If we can get one, maybe that'll be enough to change course. 5-10 doesn't truly reflect our team, but again, it kind of does.

Wyoming vs San Diego State Summary

Pokes Drop Another Close Contest Against San Diego State, 80-75

Cowboys shoot 58 percent

WYOMING vs SDSU Box Score: https://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/wyoming-san-diego-state-202301070661/

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 7, 2022) – Despite shooting 58 percent against one of the nation’s top defensive outfits in San Diego State, the Wyoming Cowboys fell to the Aztecs 80-75 on Saturday afternoon in the Arena-Auditorium. It was the second highest field goal percentage against SDSU this season (59 percent by Arizona). SDSU was receiving votes in both the Associated Press and Coaches Poll. Wyoming falls to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play with the Aztecs moving to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

“Our guys’ effort was tremendous all things considered,” UW head coach Jeff Linder said. (Brendan) Wenzel goes out in the second half and it looks like he’s going to be out for a while. But for our six or seven guys to battle a team like San Diego State from a physicality standpoint, I’m really proud of the effort. There are no moral victories. Our guys know that, but we also know that we are getting better. That is arguably one of the top five defensive teams in the country and for us to shoot 61 percent in the second half and 58 percent for the game shows that we’re doing something right on offense.”

The 58 percent from the field, which was the highest field goal percentage since shooting 62 percent against Howard. The Aztecs shot 50 percent from the field in the contest with 12 three-pointers. Wyoming had 10 triples in the game tying for the most allowed by SDSU this season. It was the seventh game with double-digit threes for the Cowboys this season. SDSU won the battle on the glass 29-24 with 11 offensive rebounds.

“Defensively in the second half, we held them to 41 percent but as I said the thing that was going to make the difference defensively was could we minimize their baskets in transition, which we did that in the second half,” Linder said. “Then it came down to it wasn’t going to be the first shot that was going to beat us it was going to be the second shot. We did a tremendous job in the first half -- they only had one offensive rebound when you throw out the one shot they air-balled and then grabbed the loose ball. But they had 10 offensive rebounds in the second half and when you add those to our 14 turnovers, that’s the difference in the game right there.”

Hunter Maldonado, who passed Fennis Dembo with his 129th career start for a school record recorded 20 points to lead the Pokes. It was his 25th game with 20 or more points in his career. Jeremiah Oden added 15 points and a season-high seven rebounds. It marked back-to-back games in double-figures. Brendan Wenzel added 14 points going 5-of-5 from the field, but he went down with an injury in the second half. Xavier DuSell added 15 points off the bench for a season high. He was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Ethan Anderson started the game with an and-one play for the Pokes, but the Aztecs responded with a pair of three-pointers for a 6-3 lead in the opening minute. Brendan Wenzel answered with a triple to tie the contest and hit another for a 9-6 Wyoming lead at the 17:37 mark of the opening half. Lamont Butler added a pair of threes for a 12-9 lead for SDSU.

The Aztecs would build a 16-11 advantage making four-straight field goals five minutes into the frame. The Pokes would go on a 5-0 run with a layup from Anderson and a three-pointer from Jeremiah Oden. Maldonado would give Wyoming a 18-16 lead at the 13:17 mark of the stanza.

The two teams would exchange the lead over the next several minutes until an and-one play from Nathan Mensah made it a 26-22 contest for SDSU with 9:44 left in the opening half. The Aztecs would build the lead to 31-24 with just under eight-minute left in the half on a three-pointer from Adam Seiko.

Xavier DuSell added the rare four-point play and Oden added a layup for a 31-30 game for the Aztecs with 6:15 left in the half. Matt Bradley would go on a 5-0 run himself to lift the Aztec lead to 36-30 at the five-minute mark of the first half. Seiko would hit another three for a 39-31 lead a minute later.

The Pokes would hold the Aztecs scoreless for over two minutes and used the free throw line to cut the Aztec lead to 41-37 with just over a minute left in the half. Brendan Wenzel would hit a three at the end of the half for a 43-42 game for the Aztecs at the break.

After a bucket by the Aztecs Maldonado tied the contest with a three pointer in the opening minute of the second half. Wenzel would give the Pokes a 48-47 lead with a triple at the 17:32 mark of the second half. The Aztecs used a pair of free throws and a triple for a 54 -50 lead with just over 15 minutes left in the game.

Maldonado tied the game with a running floater at the 13:30 for a 54-54 contest. DuSell would add a corner triple off a no look pass from Anderson for a 57-54 lead for UW at the 12:27 mark. Lamont Butler would hit a pair of threes and give the Aztecs a 60-59 lead with just under 11 minutes left.

The Pokes would go scoreless for nearly three minutes with the Aztecs building a 62-59 lead. Oden added a pair of free throws for a one-point game with 8:19 remaining. DuSell would give Wyoming a 64-62 lead with his third triple of the day with 7:41 remaining.

Wyoming would take a three-point lead again on another DuSell triple, but the Aztecs hit a pair of free throws after attacking the offensive glass for a 69-68 game for the Pokes with 5:31 remaining. SDSU would take the lead at the 4:33 mark of the contest for a 70-69 game.

Maldonado made it a one-point game at the line, but Matt Bradley hit a tough contested three for a 75-71 game with 3:16 left. The Aztecs would build the lead to 79-73 with 54 seconds remaining and would take the contest 80-75.

San Diego State was led by Butler with 23 points going 8-of-15 from the field. Bradley added 18 points in the contest.
