Wyoming Beats N. NM Game Summary

Cowboys Shoot Lights Out in 104-56 Season Opening Win Over Norther New Mexico College

Pokes shot 62 percent from field and 57 from Behind the Arc

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 7 ,2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys shot an impressive 62 from and field and 57 from behind the arc in a 104-56 win over Northern New Mexico in the season opener on Tuesday evening in the Arena-Auditorium. The Pokes got it done on the defensive end of the floor holding the Eagles to 33 percent from the field. Eight players made their debuts in the Brown and Gold with 11 players seeing action with all 11 scoring.

“I thought our response in the second half was really good,” UW head coach Jeff Linder said. “In the first half, it was the first game of the year and it is a different feel and our guys got sped up a little bit. I thought once we settled in a slowed down our guys were great. It has been a long time since we have had 22 assists and with our team that is where the game becomes cleaner. Northern New Mexico played a little messy, but our team this year needs to play a little bit more in flow and get out and not be so structured. We have very good players that can play in space, and I thought it was a good collective effort by our guys tonight.

Guard Sam Griffin added 23 points in his Cowboy debut. He went over 1,500 points in his collegiate career as well. Fellow transfer Akuel Kot, as he poured in 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting and perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. He scored 20 or more points 20 times last season at Fort Lewis College.

Forward Cam Manyawu recorded a double-double in his first career game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first doube-double in a season opener since Justin James did so against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 6, 2018. It was the first double-double by a player in their first game at Wyoming since LaDarion Jones did so against Denver in 1998. He was also second on the team with five assists in the contest. Forward Oleg Kojenets added 11 points and six rebounds, career-highs for the Nebraska transfer. Junior college transfer Kobe Newton added 10 points and was 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Brendan Wenzel added nine points and three rebounds.

The Pokes hit finished the night with 13 three pointers but did score 42 points in the paint. The Cowboys also added 28 points off turnovers forcing 20 in the contest.

“I thought we did a good job as the game went on with our defensive intensity and it didn’t waiver,” Linder said. “In a game like this where you get up big our guys did a good job. It was good for our freshmen to get in and see the ball go in. I looked up and said Cam is like five assists away from a triple double.”

After a back-and-forth opening two plus minutes, the Eagles took and early 7-6 lead, but Griffin added an and-one play for a 9-7 lead for the Pokes with 16:52 left in the first frame. He would add a three-pointer seconds later for a 12-7 advantage for the Brown and Gold.

Kot would give the Pokes a 17-10 advantage at the 13:40 mark of the first half for his first points in the Brown and Gold. Wyoming would force turnovers and take a 21-12 lead with under 12 minutes left in the stanza.

Northern New Mexico would make it a five-point game at 21-16 halfway through the half. Newton added a triple, the first of his career and Kot added a pair of free throws for a 28-19 game and another bucket from the Fort Lewis transfer made it a 30-19 game.

Griffin hit back-to-back buckets and gave Wyoming a 34-21 lead with under seven minutes left in the opening frame. Wenzel pushed the lead to 15 at 41-26 at the four-minute mark for his second triple of the game off a nice dish from freshman Jacob Theodosiou. Fellow freshman Nigle Cook got into the scoring with a triple for a 44-26 lead for the Pokes.

The Cowboys took a 48-34 lead into the break shooting 67 percent from the field going 18-of-27. UW held the eagles to 36 percent from the field.

Wyoming opened the second half on a 14-2 run to build the advantage to take a 62-36 lead in the opening three minutes of the half. Wyoming knocked down a trio of triples during the stretch coming from Kot, Wenzel and Griffin.

Newton added another triple and was fouled on the play for a rare four-point play for a 70-43 lead. It was the ninth triple of the game for the Pokes. He added another triple and pushed it to a 30-point game at 75-45 halfway through the half.

Manyawu recorded back-to-back slam and Sam Girffin hit a triple and Wyoming went on a 13-o run to make it a 92-52 game with five minutes left. Wyoming would end the run going 20-2 over five minutes and took the contest by a score of 104-56.

Emannuel Taban led the Eagles with 15 points on the night.

WBB vs North Dakota tonight

Article said that "Kati Ollilainen led UW with five assists in the exhibition victory" and "A total of 11 Cowgirls scored in the exhibition with all five newcomers getting minutes on the floor. No starter played more than 21 minutes against WCU and only one Cowgirl, Ollilainen, played more than 25 minutes on the night." Link to article

I'm thinking Ollilainen may be the one who takes Tommi's place, even though she's only a freshman (from Finland).

Wyoming Athletics Announces Plans for War Memorial Stadium Renovation

Visit
www.RestoreTheWar.com for more info

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 7, 2023) –The University of Wyoming Athletics Department announced today, Nov. 7, its public awareness campaign, and detailed plans for the upcoming renovation to the West Side of War Memorial Stadium.

Thanks to a significant investment from the Wyoming Legislature and $20 million in private funding, the “Restore the War” project is possible.

Following the conclusion of the 2023 football season, Wyoming will begin its two-phase “Restore the War,” project, which will bring significant improvements to the West Side of War Memorial Stadium.

“For nearly 75 years, War Memorial Stadium has been home -- home not just to our incredible Cowboy student-athletes, but home to the Cowboy and Cowgirl community,” remarked Athletics Director Tom Burman. “Six Saturdays each fall, we come together as a family to share our love for UW and to help propel our student-athletes in competition. We’ve seen historic wins, trophies raised, and share lifelong memories that can only be made at a place like UW. Now we must continue to invest in our home, War Memorial Stadium. This project is an opportunity to enhance the experiences we love through an investment in the very foundation that makes War Memorial Stadium so special to the State of Wyoming.”

Phase one of the project, set to begin immediately following the conclusion of football’s 2023 home slate, will see the complete reconstruction of the lower west side. This portion of the project, which is scheduled to conclude ahead of the 2024 football season, will be highlighted by a new public concourse, improved seating options, and other critical improvements:

  • Approximately 3,000 new chairback seats with cup holders, and increased width and leg room.
  • New bleacher-style seating with increased width and leg room.
  • New public concourse with added vomitories (entrance/exit points) into the War Memorial Stadium west side stands to improve traffic flow.
  • Improved ADA access to the west side of War Memorial Stadium.
  • New concourse and stadium lighting to improve spectator and student-athlete visibility and safety.
  • Newly constructed restrooms, concession stands, and team store.
Phase two of the project will begin at the conclusion of the 2024 season. This phase will include a comprehensive renovation of the War Memorial Stadium Media and Broadcast Center and will allow for significant improvements in media and guest accommodation, improved access for local, regional, and national media, including national television networks, and improved gameday efficiency.

Phase two will also include construction of a new, premium club area that will rest between the seating blocks on the lower west side, and upper west side of the stadium. The new premium area will include 216 new loge-style seats which will allow fans to enjoy all the sights and sounds of Gameday in an outdoor setting. Seats will also come with access to a new, climate controlled indoor club experience with premium food and drink options, and a full-service bar. Fans will enjoy the best pregame experience in the Mountain West and have the opportunity to step inside between the action on the field to accommodate all of your needs. All loge seats will include club access. Additional club access tickets will be available to those with seats purchased on the West Side and will become available based on priority points.

Phase two of the project is expected to be completed prior to the beginning of the 2025 football season.

In addition to the improvements to War Memorial Stadium, the project will also fund a new swimming and diving facility. Full details of that project will be announced at a future date.

The University of Wyoming Athletics department is also excited to announce the launch of www.RestoreTheWar.com, an interactive website which details the upcoming renovation to War Memorial Stadium. Fans are encouraged to visit the website to find further details, interactive FAQs, project renderings, and more important information.

Cowboy and Cowgirl supporters are also encouraged to contribute to the Cowboy Joe Club during this vital period of expansion and growth. The Cowboy Joe Club provides scholarships and resources to Wyoming student-athletes and is essential for the continued success of Wyoming Athletics. Donating to the Cowboy Joe Club will also help you increase your priority points, which will be used to allot seats/access in both the new lower west side, loge area, and premium club area inside War Memorial Stadium.

Frank Crum Notables

At the beginning of the game, thought Mo Kamara had Frank’s number but by the second half you could see a definite adjustment by Crum. Thought Kamara went out with an injury in the third quarter.

The personal foul was comical. Crum gets shoved and the finger so he shoves back. But for CSU to not get flagged for their frustration was just another example of how badly the refs were calling the game all night. But the Pokes won despite it, just laughable.

Finally, my daughter and I attended the Women’s Volleyball game after the NM game and who should happen to be sitting in our row? Frank Crum and he was so gracious and approachable that my daughter had a memorable conversation with him. So last night, my daughter went down to the field to get autographs on her hat and when she went up to Frank Crum he actually remembered and called her by name! Big win over your rival and this guy can recall my daughter’s name? Simply amazing! My daughter has talked nonstop about it!

Go Pokes!
